99% of the time it means shit if you have good snow tires. That sign is retarted. They should either only turn it on when it's really 4/6 thick and nasty inches packed on the road or check people tires, not the number of wheels powering the thing.

Half the time my 2WD X-ice equipped car is stuked behind some Cherokee or Explorer with shit all season tires weaving left and right at 10mph .... Sad.
Agreed...its certainly more the idiot behind the wheel and not the # of wheels driving the car/truck!

Not today amigo, the ford escort should have been pushed off the cliff! Lots o' gapers, passed a saab with the driver in the grips of the fear. The road was rugged during the lake band squalls!!!

Went up with Tom at the crack of 1pm with the thought of skiing Main Chute. Figured it would already be pummeled based on the 100 or so cars in the lot.

Tom on the shoulder. Must have been atleast 3.5feet through here. Lost the skin track soon after, making for some brutal early season trail breaking. Feeling soft and pudgy.

Didn't have beacons, but felt ok about the conditions. Tom goes first, tentatively making turns for fear of rocks. Didn't hit any, and soon relaxed.

Legit good skiing, no rocks, no visible tracks, stable snow.

Only instabilities we saw were in the top 6-8" of wind affected along the upper Baldy shoulder. Otherwise, nothing was moving really. Just nominal sluffing on the upper reaches of Main.

    Best first day ever.

Nice work guys, I'll be up in the AM for sure.

In the meantime, just snapped this from my living room:
There's nothing better than sliding down snow, flying through the air

damn, that a way to get the season started. looked like there some lake bands setting up for part of the day which explains the dramatically high snow totals.

Up at 5am, from PC-> alta with the lady friend by 7. Skins fucked by snow gun blowing water by 7:06. The trail was broken up as far as the top of wildcat. From there stomped it out rather slowly to Ballroom. Skied back to the car and met up with Powherb for a lap to the top of the SB tram. It was just as deep in the afternoon and the flats were still painful.

A little overnight consoladation of the snowpack won't be a bad thing IMO. Prolly back for another round of blower tomorrow.

it was like: summer, summer, summer, fall, fall, uh, back to summer, and *click* WINTER

In my opinion, no, it's not worth going up there with a sled, ever. Unless your intent is just sledding.

Sledding: Go up Snake Creek from Midway. You could get way up to the back of Alta and Brighton and it would most likely be epic.
