Thread: Wasatch 08-09 Conditions

Even though only 1 lift was open when I got there it wasn't bad. Very limited terrain but what was open was in perfectly fine shape. My first time up it was drizzling at the bottom on Gad and half-way up it was snowing. By time I got back down to the bottom it was snowing at the bottom too. When I left at 3:30 it had stopped snowing and seemed like it was trying to clear.

How about some snowpack observations vs. "I rode the lift, the bumps were sick, I saw rockstars".

Maybe we should start a "Observations from the tram" thread.

lots of rime from the ridges to below 8k. snowline moved up to about 9k and ruined the skiing, imo.

high winds off the ridges were not accurately recorded due to the heavy riming.

...oh yeah, if rocks count as bumps, they were sick.

APD, your observations from the Tram are always insightful and helpful.
    Thanks.

    Skied up Pk 10420' today.

The snow up to the top was wet and manky. The wind brought down most of the snow off the trees so gladed skiing is, for the time being, manky and cratered.

Hand pits revealed wet, 4-finger snow from top down to 2-3" above the ground where it's fist snow. I couldnt find evidence of weaknesses between snow from the 3 past storm cycles. The depth hoar forming along the along the ground was only 1-3" in the places I dug. Total depth ranged from 20-30". Seems like it's settled another couple inches in the past day.

Looks like we might get a mid-elevation mini corn cycle this weekend with cold temps friday night and warm ones on Saturday.

Anyone have the day free for a tour tomorrow? PM me.

It would be annoying. All those people asking you about your weird bindings and lack of goggles.

    skiing in snowstorms or faceshots?
    Drove past the tram today
for a couple laps in TLP.
The snowpack could best be described as matressesc.
Will try and throw up some crappy pics and more obs.
Need to get some shit done before the spancer gets home.

Skied flagstaff today and it was reasonably styrofoamy cream-like niceness. Snowbird sat across the valley laughing at me for not having a pass. Touring in the Wasatch is highly not as fun as riding the Tram. lulz

    sfb (son-of-a-fucking-bitch ),

was gonna post some super special post for you about Altabonics and all since you even made it up LCC today, but then I remembered Rules #1 and 2 of Alta-Bonics - 1. drink a beer or hit a shot before posting; 2. read post as slow as humanly possible with the pronunciation of a 1st grader trying to learn to read and life is good once again.

so, was it a Sealy, Simmons or Serta Snowpack?? Either way, you best of got laid 2night with your shriveled up, old prune dick on said snowpack - bwa mutha fukka

p.s. are my dynafits here yet??? i'm feeling the erge to train hard while HH is out of town doing shots of deer blood and then FINALLY kick his fat, breadloaf ass on the up and on the down switch to the road

glad you had a fun day out in the "other canyon" and please let me know the status of the binders

I'm still waiting for you to delete all those SorryDude references in your previous posts.
You know that Dynowhomper group buy was going on for a long time
What the hell were ya doing during that time Chasing Tail????
    GIT SUM????
Shite I wouldathunk a spancered rockstar like yourself would just use his "Pro" connections to have the eurodynopeeps comp ya a pair or 2
As far as keepin up with that twitchin vert rackin uberfit freak buddy of yours. I think lp's dukes, treckers and alpine plug boots with a Marlboro and deerblood and Yukon Yak shot every 200' of vert would be a better plan.
Aint Illta opening this weekend you'll loose a lot of gnarpoints if your standing in lift lines or crankin out high t laps with dynafits instead of those green spring binders
So any how I just went up Griz gulch cause that's what my partners wanted. You do know that the goods in wolverine and Tlp drain into the BCC. I skinned back out the highway to heaven and down to gnarlesstude where I spent all day trying to find a damn job. The top of headwall forest was creamy still but turned into rocky pine needled mank below 10k.
I know your way to core to tour w/ chicks or damn goofy oneplankers but here are a few pics
    PP

    Mrs. PP

Ya know them silverattas pure freerides are cheaper weigh the same as dynowhompers and you don't need no damn high dollar special boots
although they will self destruct if ya huck on em

Cerally I'm not sure of the status on the second round of the dyna group buy, but if you give me your word as a maggot that you will replace the pair Im gonna sell ya at that price by Xmass you can come get them tonight or I'll be up at alta donating coats mannana so I have a ticket for the HIGH boy party (missed ya and all the HCAC crew last year) but possibly conditions were to brutal that day
ps dont let TH do your mount after seeing his last season it made baby J and this
    ski tech cry.
Pss I was gonna dig a pit yesterday but some large testicled rodent did it for me.

I think he might just live in this troll hole
psss got freaky in the mancave on the tuning bench last night
but if she finds out I was huckin yesterday I'll be on the couch
    gittin none

I went for a tour with a couple other mags today. Here's pics:

Rain crust at the WP trailhead was a given, but what I didnt expect was to find that it went all the way to the summit of White Baldy at 11300'. Up high it was breakable enough to ski a'ight, though it takes agressive turning to unlock from one turn and begin the next. Okay skiing aside, there was still clear, glassy rain crust straight to the top.

Compression and shear pits revealed delicately balanced layers just below the crust. Got the top 6" to move at 3 & 4 from the elbow on two seperate columns around 10800' NW facing. The top 2" were moving on clean shears just trying to isolate the columns. The fresh windslabs from last night were a bit delicate, especially sitting on that glassy smooth crust.

Pulled out another column with a shovel shear on the graupel layer ~8" above the ground. I was surprised how cleanly it sheared, though I couldnt get it to go with a compression test. Alta patrol mentioned they got some snow to move on the graupel layer when I was up there on Wednesday. Anyone have details?

Snowpack was much less bonded in White Pine drainage than it was at similar elevation on 10420 yesterday.

IMO, the snow's pretty f-ed unless it gets warm enough this weekend to turn it to mashed potatoes. NOAA was calling for upper 30's at 10000 today but it didnt seem like it got much above 30.

well great day in all thanks to gnarwhale and posse
just for fun ill ad some more pics for ya gnar

heres the crazy rain layer that made for some crazy skiing.

not great tried to dig snow out under it so you could see it better...

and of course gnars info is credibly backed with photo evidence of his pit digging.

and also a view of the goods to be had... right along the shadow line in foreground.

a view of our massively long skin track.. and some of the skiing area..

im wore out legs are gone...
Im not sure what was worse today the hike in or the five miles of snowplowing out after the run
thanks again to gnarwhale and crew
