Raising Heathen chilluns in Mormon country?

I was looking at a job opportunity in Heber City. I don't think I'm going to follow up on it, not least because I am concerned about social influences on the chilluns.

I am not trying to decide my chilluns faith, but I also don't want the neighbors deciding it.

Can heathens be raised in rural Utah? Or am I overestimating the influence of the church there?

I think you're underestimating your influence on your children.

Underestimating? No. Understating? Maybe. The fact is, though, that even in one of the more liberal, open-minded communities in the Country, grrrr jr still comes home with Christian "facts" that he has gotten from his friends who were told them by their parents, churches, etc.

It is an effort to teach children to be skeptical in one arena when we spend so much time telling them how things are in so many others.

Okay - I have two sets of friends (non-Mormon) - life long SLC residents and they have children. Nobody's going to temple (or even to the ward). It can be and is done all the time.

Grrrrr Jr. coming home with "facts" is a great opportunity for the two of you to sit down and talk. Help him understand an decide for himself. It's a good thing. (JMHO)

Dude, think about it - once the church converts the rest of your family, you can be the lone heathen holdout. There's nothing holier than people packed into churches on a Sunday Powder day!

While the kids are in Sunday School you can be ripping knee deep freshies. Your children's souls seems like a small price to pay.

I think KQ got it right on the $$$ in her 1st post. And if your kids grow up with plenty of exposure to the Utard maggot posse, they'll be fine. Just teach them to THINK FOR THEMSELVES. Actually, teach them that no matter where you live.

To raise heathen children you must give them heathen opertunities. Similar to "Unsmart Things Done II" this will sort them out from the mormon's. When they get shunned it will leave a group similar to the Maggot's. True independent thinkers.

By the way teaching your children to be an independent thinker is one of the best things you could do for them.

Go check it out. I think its a little narrow minded to let your perceptions of the place prevent you from visiting. If I could do my present job from Heber, I'd prolly move. And I'm about as heathen as they get.

Ask around, but I'd imaging that town has a fair amount of (insert sterotypical adj. like ski bum, outdoorsy people, crack heads, here) fleeing the obnoxious housing prices up in PC.
