Jackson Area newbie offering computer fixing skills, need place to shower Oct-Nov

    I'm Eric.

I have a background in IT as a computer service technician. Sitting in front of a computer screen every day or part swapping in a data center are both good IT industry experience, but I want more than just that. The past years I have been introduced to other experiences like Burning Man and snowboarding. Turns out that I like the winter sports more than any other seasonal sport.

I drove to Jackson, WY (from Chicago, IL) a few days ago w/ just my car a little cash and no savings to be a snowboard instructor at JHMR. I intend to stay year round and make a living in the area. The available rentals in Jackson now are a plus and I like the area.

Anyone interested in a roommate (long term), or helping out a newly-initiate ski bum (short-term Oct/Nov)?

    I can offer:
    - skilled labor with practically anything technical involving construction tools or computers
    - transportation (living in town and need a ride?)
    - meet & greet for potential long-term roommates

    I would accept:
x(1) a shower to use (I have my own soap and supplies)
    - a washer/dryer to use (I have my own soap)
    - warm and safe shelter to sleep at night (garage, floor, wherever a sleeping bag goes)
    - food vouchers
    - gas money

I'm especially good at fixing computers. I have money, just not very much and trying to not spend any until the living arrangement is secured and I get employment. Not eating well enough yet (yay cans of soup!) The cheapest hostel I've seen is $25/night, it's too much. How best to live cheap in 2008 pre-season Jackson, WY while setting up?

    1) Showers at recreation center, 155 E. Gill St. have confirmed, AND there's a hot tub.

I emailed a buddy with an IT company here. Who knows, you might get lucky.

    Thanks for the reference!

I've applied at places in town, thinking ahead to summer jobs. An IT gig would be just the thing for off-season. References / resume on request, will try to figure out vBulletin forums messaging and leave my contact info for you.

I may turn this thread into a Chicagoan's Ski Bum guide to Jackson

Chamber of Commerce: Located 990 W. Broadway, kind of where the Jackson Bank is but it's tucked away just east of the bank building.

Ski club: 100 E. Snow King in the Snow King center (think ice rink), up the stairs and down the hall. Open Tue-Fri. $15 and yeah.

"The Pub": Snake River Brewery Company near the parking garage in town, just south. There's some construction going on in Oct which makes it a bit tricky to spot. The building is painted a light shade of blue I think. $4 brews and $1/off the top choice brew.

Overnight parking: Turnout north of town off Cache st. by the Elk Refuge area. It's by a body of water and gets pretty freaking cold at night though. I hear that this turnout falls between towns, and so it is unlikely that you'd get hassled for parking there.

Public restrooms: 8a-9p I think, located opposite the Anvil Motel hostel.

Hostel: Anvil Motel rates are 25/night, 140/week, 400/month

Post Office Box: there are two locations in Jackson, one location in Teton Village. I suggest applying for your PO Box online via usps.gov, print the form and turn in as instructed. The agent I interacted with was not aware that PO Boxes could be reserved online, so be patient it could take them a while to call the C/O for instructions.

Laundry: The "Laundrette" has wash+fold service. Missing Sock is coin-op, slightly more expensive (and better run) than the dollar+magcard only Soap Opera. Everything in the Soap Opera on the east side of the business is broke down, use the west side machines instead.

Roommate/Stuff/Housing searches: besides craigslist, try www.jacksonholeradio.com classifieds, and listen to KMTN radio from 9:30-10:50 for the "trash & treasure" featured broadcast. If you're working for JHMR there is an employee housing pool which begins after you receive your job offer.

Internet: The visitor information center near the Elk Refuge is within range of the Rustic Inn (ssid=rustic), The Bunnery restaurant has wifi available and $1.99 endless cup of coffee, the Teton County Library is *very* nice for a small town and offers wifi access + printing from library express-internet 15 minute kiosks (first 4 page sides are free to print, $0.15/page after that)

Law Enforcement: This is a conservative town. There are patrols on the two main streets (Broadway, and Cache St). I'm told by residents that
    - you will be thrown in jail and fined $100 if found drunk in public.
    - you will be hunted down and verbally warned at an inconvenient hour of the morning (say 2:30am) for being resident in Jackson and having out-of-state license plates
I've seen one DUI stop being exercised. Otherwise, it looks like a sane place to live and I have not been hassled for having out-of-town plates.

Parking: There's parking everywhere pre-season. Watch out for dogs when driving around near sidewalk areas, there's no leash law that I can tell.

Bank: The bank of JHMR is Wells-Fargo in Teton Village. If you are employed by JHMR, there is an employee benefit offered through Wells-Fargo bank (Free checking, debit card, etc.). If you are applied and waiting for employment, you can still talk to someone and get the benefits under the pretense that you will be an JHMR employee.

Good start. There's also wireless at McDonalds with any purchase, or Pearl street bagels, which has much better bagels than McD's. Yeah, you can get tossed in the clink for public intox, but only if you're being a dick, generally. Put the Maverick gas station down as 'home of cheap eats' [but ya get what ya pay for...]. Also, you might check Days Inn for cheap rates. I remember Advres posting somewhere that he got a cheap room there for his first month after he hit town. Good luck-
Something about the wrinkle in your forehead tells me there's a fit about to get thrown
And I never hear a single word you say when you tell me not to have my fun
It's the same old shit that I ain't gonna take off anyone.
and I never had a shortage of people tryin' to warn me about the dangers I pose to myself.

Yuppers. I told them I was moving and looking for an apartment and needed to rent week-by-week until I found a place. They gave me the 'locals' rate which I think was $10 cheaper a night. I think I stayed there for 4-5 weeks. I forget now how much it was but something like $210 a week. You can find places for $150/week but I wanted wireless internet and a hot tub.
