Thinking of buying a buddy's old sled: 1996 Arctic Cat EXT-580 EFI.
I'm used to working on cars and know nothing about sleds. Is something this old going to be hard to find parts for?
Around here you need a sled to putter up logging roads to get to backcountry ski terrain, so no need or budget for a mountain sled.
Figured an old sled was a cheap gateway drug.
Here's a few photos of me demo riding a 2013 Ski Doo Summit 800 XM 154 in Brandywine BC yesterday. Handles like a dream. I promptly plopped down $500 for the 2014 spring order.

Let's talk trailer decks...
Mine is getting all torn up. Anyone have a line on a product that can help that out? I've seen some people use plastic truckbed liners and cut them up so the skis have something to slide one, but I'm not buying one of those just to cut it up. any other ideas?
I had good luck posting a "WTB" on Craigslist for a plastic bedliner, might be worthwhile.
Otherwise, the commercially available ski-glide stuff works really well, just $$$. The cheap answer seems to be bedliner, and it really is not that hard to find a cracked/beat up one lying around.
Maybe go to a junkyard, see if you can find a beat one, bring your snips?

no problem with tandem... did it all day long filming and it was fairly easy to power up a sidehill even. I think the new 146 might be a bit squirrely, but the 154 was fine and I'm thinking the 163 might be the new 154!
You are more than welcome to come up and ride anytime! The slednecks crew will show you the goods!

Find a shop that does the spray in bedliners. They often have old plastic liners that people replaced with spray in .
I got a 97 580 powder special as my first sled. I had a little trouble getting the clutches tuned, but the sled's motor was really reliable. I used it for a few years, gave it to a buddy, and he has passed it on to another friend. It worked really well for back country access.
Fvck yeah, I'd love to. Don't want to jinx it but I might be moving a bit closer.
I watched two guys falling all over themselves trying to tandem up with one of those things. They were griping about it and had no issues on the other sleds they had.
I guess they just sucked.
You just made my life difficult.

Just got my new RMK "Poachninja'd" . For those that haven't watched enough in Ninja movies, the chinese looking character that is scattered about the design is the character for "shinobi" or stealth and the first character in the word "ninja". All the resorts seem to have opened up the trees in Japan so the real poachninja has to go elsewhere. Having spent a season on the sled just boondocking, I think I have the skills to take it to a few of the bankrupt resorts and get some poaching in.

Thanks for the advice on the trailer deck, TacocaT and Mannix
I'm loving the K-Truck the poachninja sled is parked in. I was so jealous and stoked to have seen a few sleds being driven around in the K-trucks in Hakuba this year.

I came soooooooooo close to buying a raptor but balked at it only having lhd. Actually I don't use a k truck usually as I have a 2003 Toyota Hilux. The k belongs to the guy that did the graphics

Snowchecked a 2014 freeride 154. Thanks Pow 11 for the stoke. Everyone I know on the XM says they love them and would never go back and they are all sledskiers. Join the club and join the darkside of ski touring.
If not I have 2 09-Ski doo Summit XP's for sale. $6000each 154 and a 144. both with 2200miles.
PM me
After a few days sled skiing this past winter I am suckered in!
Right now I'm doing some serious shopping around for a spring/summer deal. Looking to spend 3k or less on a sled and hopefully trailer, max would be 3500.
Pretty sure I want an 05/06 M7. They seem to be the most reliable for that vintage/price point and handle great by all accounts. The 600 Rev looks solid too but I think it would be a little underpowered for doubling up, most everything else seems to be out of my price range or too prone to problems. Budget is pretty firm as this will be my first sled and I want to A) ride it a ton instead of paying something newer off and B) afford to fix it when I crash it and break things.
Let me know if ya got anything, or if you can vouch for riding tandem on a 600/something older. Couple options here in town, some better options within a 3-5hr drive, but I'm not in a hurry to buy until the right one comes along. Also not going to be talked into dropping 4k+, even if it's a sweet machine.
Psyched to braaaaap next season!

Price police help here.
What's a fair price for a 2007 M8 162 with less 500 miles? Low miles but 7 model years old, so not sure what its worth.
And was it a relatively reliable year/sled?
