Not a new concept... The Euro's have been playing with this idea to save some of their glaciers and year around ski fields...

In the meantime, Alaska glaciologists measured growth of some of the larger glaciers this year instead of shrinkage... Go figure...

yeah they protect a lot of glaciers with these big ass white mats in the alps.. and in finland (maybe some other scandinavian countries also) they store big piles of snow which is used for making xc trails in the autumn.. you'd have to "store" so much more snow for it to make a base for a ski run though.
