Question Anybody own a "Red Protection MT1"? (Helmet)

I'm curious if it's just a moto lid marketed by a snowsports company or what? I know I could score a moto lid for well under $249.

Anybody got some dirt? The vents and removable liner sound good, but...

    Helmet pictured here:

I think it's the one hop has.

If that is so, then it is not a motoX helmet that's been stickered up for Burton/RED. All motoX helmets I've seen/used have been heavier and had more and better (i.e. thicker/more comfy/better fit) padding and "felt" way more secure; however also felt like they'd be slightly heavy for skiing.

You can probably use a motoX helmet for skiing if you want to; but personally I'd be slightly afraid of it's weight in long ragdoll-type falls where it might put more strain on the neck. On the other hand it might just stand up to long radoll falls over rocks and stuff.... Maybe that'll make up for the weight?

Hope my ramblings helped a bit.

The carbon-fiber moto lids will often be respectably light. Main problem is they will be hot as hell due to very little venting. I have never seen a motorcycle helmet with meaningful top or side vents: they'll have impressive looking air scoops with tiny little round holes underneath.

The main advantage you get going to an expensive full-face helmet is: if you drop polycarbonate (plastic) on a hard surface, it bounces. This is not good for your neck. If you drop fiberglass/carbon fiber, it thuds and doesn't bounce.

This is less important for ski helmets because snow is usually not as hard as pavement. But if you spend a lot of time in the park, it's worth thinking about.

Shorty snow or bike helmets usually don't have a meaningful shell at all, because they don't need to support a chin guard -- just a paper-thin plastic layer to keep the sun off the styrofoam. So they don't have the bounce problem.

I'd just like to put in my recommendation for the Bell Bellistic.

"Made of a tough, multi-layered fiberglass shell with EPS foam liner, the Bellistic features full-face coverage, an adjustable retention harness, adjustable visor and large eye port to accomodate goggles, and 15 built-in vents."

I bought one of these after splitting my lip open and skied with it for a month or two. I went with it because it was the only helmet that fit my oval head well. The Giro Flynt is round, and the other full faces I saw didn't fit quite right or seemed flimsy. This helmet appears to be bomber. It has twice the foam of any ski helmet and the chin guard doesn't flex like others. And even though it has 15 vents, most are covered. It still breathes though since there are channels under the shell that allow air to enter each of the vents. My only complaint so far is that the chin strap should be a little more forward. I got used to this fairly quickly though. Best part: $75.

    Thumbs up

Cool. Thanks for all the info and links. I love my flint, but I keep managing to slip my knee up under the chin guard. Losing a tooth last season was just too painful and expensive ($1800 to date, more to come). Sounds like it's time to go try on some lids.

I have an MT-1, but rarely use it (impulse buy) If you have a gigantic melon like me, I'll let it go to ya for a song.

I find it to be quite comfy. The chinguard is much beefier than the flint, but not quite as close to your mouth as the moto lids.

josh, let me go try on a few MT1s at the store and see how they fit. If I dig the helmet and fit I'll definitely be looking at yours. What size did you buy?

If you can get ahold of an MT-1 you should pick it up because they stopped making them.

    MD,

Check out Larson's ski shop off I-70 and Kipling. I was in there a couple of weeks ago and they had 3 Giro Mad Max S lids (all 3 different colors) in a medium for $129. These retail for $189. Same look and protection as a MotoX helmet, but more ventilation and lighter weight. Of course I have no use for one like that, but this may be what you are looking for. PM or call if you need directions.

Or, you could just buy one even cheaper here:

My MT-1 is XL (that's size 62.) Like I said. Gigantic melon.

Interested? I've worn it all of twice.

I might be interested. I have to measure my head first. My Flint doesn't fit me right and that's a XXL.

My brief experience with a more burly fullface was a goddamn fog-fest. I couldn't see shit.

    YMMV

I picked up the predessor to that one. Same fit etc., just with a detatcheable jaw wraparound.
Good fit and venting, only gripe is the fit is a little different than most of the helmets I've tried, I had some extra space between the top of my head and the sides, but the fit kit filled that up pretty good. Search around on e-bay, I grabbed mine around this time last year for $40.

Other thing I liked about it, is it's light for as well built as it is. Really don't notice much of a difference between my regular lid and this one.

I've got a Flint SC (thanks phUnk).

I found that it deflected my knees away from my chin the two times they came up high enough to remind me what a kneecap is. If you're hucking and your legs are right under ya, watch out. Like BakerBoy said, gorilla steeze would solve the problem altogether.

They're more useful at keeping tree branches from swatting your neck/face when skiing in tight trees -- or any tree for that matter.

josh, feel free to give slim first dibbs. I'm pretty sure that lid would be too large. I doubt I'll pick up a lid for another few months. I'm just researching right now.
