An automated experimental milker for rat.

    Watanabe T.

Department of Veterinary Biochemistry, College of Bioresource Sciences, Nihon University, Kanagawa, Japan.

The development of sucking pressure was investigated with an artificial nipple in 16 male and female rat pups on postnatal days 4, 7, 10, 14, and 18.....

Based on these results, the maximum level of negative pressure of the automated experimental rat milker was set at -160 mmHg. The automated experimental milker for rat is able to collect milk from lactating mothers by alternating negative and atmospheric pressures through two solenoid valves and a vacuum pump attached to a microcomputer. Mother rats were milked with the automated experimental milker on postpartum days 4, 7, 10, 14 and 18 of a single lactation period. .... rest of abstract is boring
    Oh GOD!
    I think I'll write a grant proposal.
Think of it: A study of the psychological impact on rat pups of artificial nipples!
Finally, my own article in NATURE! A NOBEL!!! WooHoooooo!!!!

I take it those packs are loaded with that delicious yak milk? Can't the yaks just accept that some of us like the taste of rotten cantaloupe?

It get's better...here's a part of the abstract that I didn't post earlier:

The rat pups refused to suck on the artificial nipple on postnatal day 14 or day 18 thus negative sucking pressure had to be calculated by regression analysis....

Did they use a Kalman Filter to predict the proper nipple pressure? Is there a Fields Prize in the offing?

Men can lactate, but typically only under unusual circumstances such as a pituitary tumor (and one that affects the lactotroph cells of the pit.), hormonal therapy, etc. I don't know what men lactate, but I think it's pretty similar to, if not, sweat.

I don't know the medical name for this condition.

    See?
And you people think I'm so full of shit.
Well, you're right. I am full of shit. But it's the lack of milk tat really worries me. And my failure at breeding high speed yaks to develop skiing in Aframistan, Nipal and Pankakistan.
