    Deep bruising, thigh - questioin

My injury is not sports related but I'm still hoping for some insights from people who have sustained deep bruising injuries to the thigh.

My husband was not paying attention as I opened the gate for him to drive through and he pinned me to the gate post with the pickup truck. After a multitude of X-rays I was told it was just deep bruising. I was to get up and move (as if I had a choice!) and I knew that anyway.

The question I have now is that it has been over a month but, while there is no pain on walking or standing, the bruising area is still edematous - shakes like a bowlful of jelly when poked - and the thigh is still much larger than the other one. It is also still painful if pressed on. I am concerned about blood clotting and the dangers there-of.

If anyone has similar experiences I'd appreciate hearing. Thanks.

You have a hemotoma, you should be worried if it becomes hard and doesn't shake like a bowl of jelly, you will see improvement when it starts to sag lower towards the knee....don't worry, just be patient

occasionally a physician might decide to drain something large like that but the risk of infection tends to outweight the likelyhood that draining it may help.

The big thing you want to do is get your motion back ASAP. Severe thigh contusions will occasionally calcify. There will be no evidence of this type of condiyion for upto 6-8 wks after the injury.

Gentle compression may help you at this point in your recovery. Now that it has been over a onth, if your pain and swelling are decreasing and your motion begining to get better, you may decide to try some warm soaks (bath tub/hot tub) to help your body reabsorb the hematoma. only do this if your swelling is down and there is no active bleeding.

    OK, no worries

Thanks, guys. I feel a lot better now. I got my motion back some time ago - Hurricane Ike saw to that. I can do anything I want to do, I was just concerned about the continued edema.

    I appreciate your help
