Tired of "Server Too Busy"? Help me out.

OK - this database is getting friggin huge. The reason that you are getting these errors is because the tables for posts are getting massive. I'd like to axe all of the "Drivel" history without seriously affecting the quality posts we've had in here.

The only way to effectively do this is to mass prune everything that hasn't been touched in x days -- I'm thinking 200 days.

Here are 2 ways you can help:

    1. You have the ability to axe your own posts. Search out your own posts and delete all of the old insigificant stuff.

    2. Find threads that you value and bump them so that they've been touched more recently than 200 days.

In the future when you post stuff like "paging XXX" or "Hey XXX empty your PM box!" delete it once it 's acheived it's purpose. The same goes for any little insignificant threads that we really don't need to keep. A little housekeeping is in order - that's all.

Thanks maggots. I'll be doing some mass pruning early next week.

hah, I tried to post a reply but got the "server is too busy" twice.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up ONS. Let the IS geeks at Primedia take notice of how not to piss off a forum.

    Hey ONS,

Is there anyway we can have a forum area, such as "Padded Room" or "Ski/Snowboard" called "History" and instead of bumping every few hundred days, we just move the important stuff over there after 150 or so idle days. It would be up to the origional poster to move it, and only they and you can do so. It would have to be a self moderated thing, but if you made that an area that wouldn't automatically delete, then the rest could be done automatically.

    Just a thought.

I can do that, but it isn't an option when pruning en mass. I have to do it one at a time. Just not time effective.

well, you all can be happy in that the largest TR-picture thread (which, I might add, also had the distinction of being the largest NSR TR), my Banner trip TR...is gone. Actually deleted it about a week ago.

So there, can I have a medal now?

I'll do what I can to clean out my "crap" posts. I'm sorry though, my recent Onion thread is gonna have to stay.

Keep whatever you want. The object is to axe the stuff that holds no value for you.

well in addition to it taking up a whole hell of a lot of your bandwidth, I also decided that it might be nice to actually be able to get a security clearance someday...so now the evidence is gone

Any way to search for threads that we started...

yeah, go to "Search", and where it says search by user name, put in yours. Then, if you delete the first post on your thread, it deletes the whole thread.

It's not a space thing. It has to do wit hthe size of the tables that have to be processed on every single submission, search, post view, and refresh. It just hammers the processor. This is a burly box with lots of space. We just need to clean up after ourselves every once in a while...

    Hey Owens,

Another forum that I belong to simply archives every once in a while. You can't post in those but then the knowledge in them isn't gone either.

I would prefer this if it is posssible.

also deleting time sensitive posts (all the rollcalls) could be in order

not only that but if it happens then you'll be totally fucking up the contest to see if anybody's used a word before

Yea mine too. My work is done, all the old threads I started that didn't amount to too much are gone. Actually, I noticed that most of the threads I start don't amount to much (as far as the number of replies)

It's kinda six of one, half dozen of the other, LB. That method still keeps the posts in the DB tables and they are still accessible, so thats good. Bumping them also keeps them current and in the DB tables, threfore immune to a mass pruning based on the time they were "last touched". One doesn't really have value over the other database wise except that a lot of the classics end up getting grouped together and thereby make for some cool random browsing in an achive. If you guys do a bunch of bumping, maybe I'll archive the older stuff that you bump so it doesn't have to be weeded out on the next prune.

I promise you this though, I won't ever just start slashing away without asking for you guys help in preserving the good stuff.

For now, the thing that will help the most is axing the trash.

    Hey Owens:

So one thing other boards do is take all of the threads older than a certain date and move them into an "offline" area. Does this board have that ability? So you have all of the old drivel laying around, but it's not in the tables any more, or it's in some secondary table that doesn't get hit when you're just cruising the regular board.

edit : LB beat me to it...

how about putting up a totally locked mirror site? That way it is still the same size but segregated from the current db tables. Plus they'll get used so little that they'll be not such a big server too busy problem.

I know there is a lot of "trash" but IMVHO internet debris all has some kind of value. I know that I go back to old stuff all the time on boards that don't delete stuff looking for info.

ps- I know jack about computers and stuff

woodsy- I know an easier way (check out my count)

my vote is for an area of locked and archived posts. most of the tech forums i browse use this feature and are also ubb/php boards.
