Exact same thing happened to me in 2005. my girlfriend and I were in Ensenada staying at the Best western when we stopped by the little mart right next door. on the way out, after buying munchies, we walked right into a armored truck with guys jumping out, running right at us, with Autos, shotguns and facemasks we just B-lined it right to our room, never looked back.
other then that we had a fantastic trip.

If U want a safe place to camp past Ensenada try "Coyote cal's", it's a Hostel with rooms, camping, showers etc. CC is in Erinderia about a hour south on Ensenada. also a good safe place at "shipwreaks-freighter" about 3.5 hours S of Ensenada, its middle of nowhere, there is a surf school, lots of Ex-pats in the community and a fenced in camping ground right there.

with all that being said, I havnt been down there in a couple years and the situation there seems very fluid, so take with a grain of salt.
