The race starts in the mountains. Anything before that is all show.
Ski, Bike, Climb.
Resistence is futile.
In '98 or '99 Armstrong was down 35 minutes before he won it in the mountains. 9 minutes in the flats is nothing.Originally posted by ak_powder_monkey

There are breaks of all sorts almost everyday, USPS per their gameplan chose to let them go, as there were likely not GC contenders in the break. If someone of concern was in the break it would have been shut down quickly. The only reason so much time was gained by the riders in the break yesterday was because Postal let them get that far ahead.Originally posted by ak_powder_monkey

I saw a quick not on Cycling News regarding one of the riders avg HR in yesterday's stage, 117bpm, I know these guys are worldclass athletes, but that's low, likely not much effort was expended yesterday for those shielded in the peloton.
Agreed, yesterday looked like a long dreary day on a bike. There are plenty of riders in the Tour that never go off the front and even fewer that win a stage; I think any rider attempting a break-away has some guts.Originally posted by Artie Fufkin

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

All of those guys will lose 15+ minutes on the first mountain stage. If they could hang on the climbs, they never would have been allowed to get a lead like that.Originally posted by ak_powder_monkey

Man I was pissed when they dude in the breakaway got caught witha K to go...

Thoughts:
--When the breakaway riders are caught by the Peloton, it is sometimes because their sprinters and coaches are calling them back. It happens too often. The breakaway riders are there to catch some points along the way, while the sprinters are there for the finish. It's part of the sport, bullshit or otherwise.
--I remember last year 2 breakaway riders were caught within the last 2km. It looked as if they could have held to the end, but they did not. The winning rider, some panzy sprinter type on the same team as 1 of the breakaways, quit the next day, because the hills lingered in the distance. Need to check the stats, but it was 1 or 2 days before the hills began. Although a pacifist, the death penalty should be considered in these cases. Ruin the stage, win it, and then quit...no, I think not.
--US Postal has a template that they have followed for the past few years. Look back at the stats (and correct me if I am wrong here) and what I remember is the same beginning every year. Day 1 a strong showing, but not normally a win for Lance. TTT always a battle. USPS is a team, and I think Lance likes to give them their due recognition. Otherwise, it is chill (meaning keep it safe because a fall can ruin the race) and wait for the hills. In the hills, keep up or lose. By the end of the hills, it is pretty much a done deal, or boiled down to the true few contenders. Then the flats are more interesting as it is a few teams playing along with the others adding the unknown dimension.
--Remember, Lance is in it to win the Tour de France. All the stages matter little except in light of the big picture. This is not every rider's, nor every team's goal. We should soon see a day of advertisement from a lesser known team; usually a team will lead the Peloton for a long time, giving them ad time on TV. The Tour is also about cash and sponsorship, not just winning.
