Got me the Rusty DI 7'6" for $335, not bad. My first "shortboard". They got some other nice looking sticks as well, if you can deal with being an epoxy riding kook.

I'm not sure a 7'6 is that much of a shortboard. I think the DI is a fun board shaped to look like a shortboard.

    Did you not see these:

I bought one of those on a drunken whim from Whiskeymilitia.

Underwhelming boards, and even at 50% off, not worth it.

Yes. Didn't have the finish of a $800 board or, from my perspective, the refinement of shape. felt "off" For a longboard log surftech might be ok, for shortboards, meh.

I got no problems with epoxy. I've had a 9-0 Surftech for years. Sam George told me to buy it. It surfs great and is durable as hell. I understand the romanticism of foam and all, but I don't think I'm surfing on a small and thin enough board to feel it. And with Clark foam done, well, just one more reason to move on to a cheaper and more durable board, or in my case stick with it. The only foam I ever surfed was a waterlogged 10-0, so I've never felt like I was missing anything. Maybe I am, but as few times as I make it out a year, $335 was justifiable whereas $600 would not be.

Really. My gun is an 8'4", my mini guns are 7'1" and 7'6".

I guess when I think of a "gun" it starts working at about double overhead and goes from there.

Less than that I am on a 6'5" or 6'7" shortboard.

All in all, it has a lot more to do with the shape of the board than the length. Squash, round, swallow and generally fat tails = short board. Pin, rounded pin, drawn-in square tail and generally narrow tails = gun.

Bossass - you ain't missing nuthin. I have been surfing for twenty plus years, so plenty of experience with polyester resin boards. They do have a nicer flex, which can spring your board, but only when you are really charging. 90% of the surfers out there will not bend the board.

And, if you really charge hard, the epoxy board will flex as well. Regardless - epoxy is way more durable, and now that I have three of my board shapes pinned, the next (and last) generation will be epoxy. I will pay $600 to have them custom built, but they will last forever. Don't really think Clark Foam going out of business changed anything - they weren't doing anything that could not be (and is being) replicated.

custom shaped epoxies aren't anything like a surftech
