Monday Contest - Ski the 14ers

Okay, since randosteve and ATApostle are giving away free skis on their blogs, I thought I would give a prize in this forum. I tried to give this book away last winter with a TR contest but for various reasons it didn't happen. So, it's back to generate some pre-winter excitement. We're going to play a game of "Who Am I?" today at 3pm mountain time. First person to post the correct guess after I post the clue wins the book - buy me a beer someday for shipping costs.

Googling is weak but unfortunately acceptable. . . . see you at 3pm.

Bump with 20 minutes to go and a warning that the correct answer will have 2 parts.

First person to fill in both blanks. I'll toss in the latest issue of Alpinist if you can name the mountain that has a face named after me!

My name is ________________________________. I was accused of abandoning dying teammates on Cho Oyu to serve my own summit ambitions, and managed to ski that peak from 24,000 feet, setting a record at the time for descent at altitude. I pushed the limits of what was possible in ski mountaineering by making a 48 minute descent of ______________________. I disappeared while soloing Tirich Mir in 1975, and only my backpack was ever found. There are rumors I was working for the CIA and eventually worked with the mujahedeen against the Soviets in Afghanistan. Some say I was killed and buried in the 80s by the Soviets. Nobody knows the real story.

Fritz Stammberger(spelling), and Mt. Hayden has the face named after him. He was also famous for the first descent of N Maroon here in CO and for never wearing gloves and walking around town(Aspen) with snowballs in his bare hands as training. Give the book and magazine to whoever guesses the first descent here in CO since I already have it.

edit: nevermind, I type too slow.

Damn, I guess that was too easy. Big prize goes to TeleHoar - good on you for donating it for the CAIC! PM me your addy.

The answer is indeed Fritz Stammberger, who skied North Maroon Peak after climbing the route. Anyone who walks around clenching snowballs for training and married a Playboy centerfold is good people, in my book!

Jeff Long wrote an interesting piece in Climbing back in 1995 where Fritz played a supporting role. Interesting reading. . . .
