    Ortovox S1 Update

    Today at our annual ski patrol event ( http://amn08.nmnsp.org/ ), Marcus showed me the new S1 upgrade while I was running the beacon practice station.
    I won’t have mine upgraded for another week or so, but thus far, based on what I saw, the biggest noticeable changes are:
    - a large solid arrow (left or right) is shown to direct the searcher if the unit should be rotated to the left or right
    - a smaller outlined arrow (at various angles) is shown next to the buried victim symbol to emphasize the searcher>victim directional relationship (i.e., essentially to supplement the grid-like display)

    Overall, attendees seemed to like many aspects of the S1, although they weren’t sure as to their overall opinion. (Similar reactions to the Pulse, although not as many attendees tried that.)

    I talked to Marcus at Ortovox today. I'd heard a variety of rumors about the S1 update, etc. As of a few days ago, bc.com customer service seemed not to know anything - so I called Ortovox at their suggestion.

    Word is that the software update is good to go. But that the dealers, at least in the Seattle area, still need to get "the updater" from Ortovox before they can do updates themselves. If you want the update now, you can send the beacon into Ortovox. Otherwise it sounds as though the dealers should have the updater in a month give or take.

    In addition to the stuff Jonathan mentioned, the update apparently also incorporates better noise reduction which addresses some of the electrical interference issues that have been talked about in the past...

    Do you have the address to send the beacon to Ortovox? Did they mention anything about turn around time?

    I met Marcus at the CAIC benefit the other night. Nice guy, and he pointed out some of the upgrades. It seems like some significant work was done on the filtering. It picked up a beacon about 20 feet away in a room with hundreds of active cell phones. I'm optimistic. I'll post something once I actually get the upgrade.
