Slater just came from behind to win it.
I should want to cook him a simple meal, but I shouldn't want to cut into him, to tear the flesh, to wear the flesh, to be born unto new worlds where his flesh becomes my key.

A constant thread through the contest was someone trailing a needing a big score in the last couple of minutes of the heat. Well, it was almost like clockwork that a wave would come and the surfer would tear apart the wave, get the score, and win the heat. I guess the exception was in the semi-final when Bebe Durbidge needed a score, caught a good wave a second before the horn, but made a mistake. Kelly went onto the final.

    Final - Kelly vs Taj
Well, Burrow had Kelly comboed ten minutes into the heat with a 9.0 and 9.63. Kelly clawed back grabbing a 9.7 with fifteen minutes left in the heat, but still needed another good score. He snagged a 9.27 with about a minute left.

Oh, the final was 40 minutes, not 35 like the rest of the heats. In an interview, Kelly said that he asked about extending the final to 40 minutes due to some of the lulls. Well, Kelly needed that extra five minutes to get that extra excellent score.

great week. got to catch most days. Tuesday went off. Slater's last wave didnt seem to be a 9, but he pulled it out at the end. Taj had a few in the final minutes that he passed on thinking that Slater wasnt going to get it. Props to Slater and all the guys for giving everyone a great show

Surfed there this morning and it was super fun. Talk in the water was that Slater's last wave was probably over-scored but that he'd been underscored on his other wave, so two wrongs make a right. Insane contest, though.

I never really understand the scoring. Maybe Slater was over-scored on the 9.27 But he only needed a 8.7 so......
It seems like that every time Slater wins some Aussie is complaining
I thought he did enough to beat Taj (who was RIPPING too)
The Final was the best heat of surfing I've ever watched
If you have Surfline go watch the 10 best waves. The state of professional performance surfing is going places I would have never thought possible 10 years ago

So if Kelly wins in France he's pretty much got the title clinched, right? He could sit it out and even if Taj won, Kelly'd still be in the lead. Someone do some math for me and figure out what the minimum he'd need to do to win.

COOLANGATTA, Australia (Thursday, September 11, 2008) - Well, we’ve just seen an incredible event at the Boost Mobile Pro pres. by Hurley at Lower Trestles and Kelly Slater has won his 5th event of the season.

While he may be the runaway ratings leader on the 2008 ASP World Tour, the Floridian hasn’t clinched his 9th Title...not yet anyway.

Slater could grab the 2008 ASP World Title at the next stop, the Quiksilver Pro France, and here are the scenarios:

    - If Kelly wins in France, Taj needs a 3rd and Bede and Mick need 2nds to take the Title race to Mundaka (Joel is out of the race if this happens).

    - If Kelly finishes 2nd in France, the race for the ASP World Title will certainly go to Mundaka as even if Taj gets a 33rd, he can still come back. Bede will need a 3rd and Parko a 1st in France to stay in the race if Kelly gets a 2nd.

So there you have it kids, it’s a win in France for Kelly to seal.
