I think Alonso has been a victim of circumstance more than anything. He breaks out with Renault in 2005 and 2006 ending the Ferrari dominance. Goes to Mclaren which was at a disadvantage to Ferrari in 2007. Then back to Renault where he is competitive, but a lower first tier team. If he stayed at Mclaren he probably would have won the 2008 WDC. Then to Ferrari in 2010 which was always not on par with the Redbulls in the early part of the 2010s and then back to a Mclaren that in a period of like 3 years lost Vodafone, Mercedes, and Mobil 1.

Victim of circumstance. Alonso is the GOAT of the current generation of drivers that came into F1 in the 2000s/2010s and he gets what Indy means. How can you not love the guy.

    Totally agree.

Last christmas I was on the same go cart track where Valtteri Bottas was doing his conditioning laps, doing 27sec lap times and I clocked my best at around 29sec.
In my defence there were three other people on the track when I did my time and he practiced on a empty track.
So, basically I am only about 7% slower than Valtteri?
I could do an offer that I could substitute him on Mercedes for...say...7% cheaper pay?

The floggings will continue until morale improves.

Interesting race at Austria. Almost everyone was managing some sort of issue. Nice to see Hamilton retire and Vettel score some points.

Ah, the Bog. Crazy shit. And that picture is of an event there that would be the end of Bog festivities. I was there that year, but, missed the burning, just drove in and by the wreckage, and said, holy shit, thats a bus! Seems that some nice race fan or fans stole the bus that some Brazilian fans had been using, luggage and all, and drove it down to the Bog and torched it in broad daylight. You can assume that drugs and a plentiful amount of alcohol were a contributing factor. Local authorities filled the Bog after that, and state troopers made sure that the festivities involving building huge fires with cars would end. I always thought that incident led to the end of F1 at the Glen.

    ^ it didn’t help

But I believe, as my Uncle says who used to attend all those races.. ‘’can’t host F1 at the Glen anymore, nowhere to put the Beautiful People.’’

Yeah. That year (I think, 75?), one could walk through the paddocks for a small fee before race day, day and night, and stand so close to the teams that you could steal a tool. Next time I saw an F1 race was the inaugural Indy (2001?) event, and the closest I could get to the teams was a chain link fence about a hundred yards away, where I saw waiters in jackets scurrying about with towels on their arms. Thanks, Bernie. You made it the sport of the rich.

I was able to watch a replay of the race on YouTube. I wonder how long that video will be up? An interesting note for me was only positions 1-4 were on the same lap. Positions 5 and lower were all at least one lap down. Not a lot of parity between the top 3 teams and the rest of the field.

3 years ago was Mercs only on the first laps

Unfortunately this level of parity is the rule, not exception

Two mercs and a Red Bull retired. Grosjean lapped in 5th was really an 8th.

The front to back of the grid is tighter than it was back in the glory days of the 80s... that everyone pines for.... when almost the entire field was lapped at every race.

If you wanted racing action yesterday the MotoGP race from Assen was where it was at. Over 100 position changes between the front eight.

I was watching some Aussie supercar action the other day, reminded me of the PWC, awesome racing and passing on almost every lap.

That train of first four through Maggots, Becketts, Chapel after last safety car was spectacular.

    Great race.

Santino Ferrucci is ballsy. Hopefully he gets picked up in Indycar . Not the most talented driver but gotta appreciate the chutzpah

That really shows how much it's the track, not always the cars, that make the show.

    Unlikely.

Hope he has a career other than racing driver in mind now.

The current version of Silverstone is an amazing track. And shows off the cars at their best. But I think this generation of cars (and the new DRS zones) particularly suit it.

Ferrari engine tweaks scared the hell out of Mercedes too. Without that Mercedes would have dominated.

Ferrucci fired by Trident over deliberate post race collision with team mate, driving race car with phone in hand and his father not making contractual payments.... plus they're suing him for the missing funds.

Haas collecting all information about his ongoing position as development driver.

Great career move. What a douche bag.

Three-time Formula 1 world champion Niki Lauda underwent successful lung transplant surgery in Vienna, Austria on Thursday.

Lauda, 69, is a non-executive chairman of the Mercedes Formula 1 team, and owns a percentage of the reigning F1 world champions. He was reportedly taken ill while on holiday in Ibiza recently, and flew to Vienna for treatment for a “severe cough”.

Lauda suffered lung injuries in his fiery crash in the 1976 German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring that almost cost him his life. He inhaled toxic gases and flames in the crash’s aftermath, but made an amazing recovery to return to the sport just three races later.

A statement from the Vienna General Hospital said: “Due to a severe affection of the lungs, Niki Lauda had to undergo a lung transplantation at the AKH Vienna today. The transplantation was done successfully by Walter Klepetko, head of thoracic surgery, and Konrad Hotzenecker.

“We kindly ask for your understanding that the family won't give any official statements and we ask to protect the privacy of the Lauda family.”

Wow, good luck Niki, you are one tough bastard.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

Just saw that headline. Haven't read about it--and Red Bull had been saying they were close to signing him again, I thought. So Sainz is out? Who looks good for the Red Bull seat next year? I have trouble believing Renault will be competitive for podiums, with or without Ricciardo.
