    Looking for a crank

I'm looking for a steel square taper crank. I plan on putting it on a lathe spinning it to size, threading it to fit a BMX freewheel cog and a fixed sprocket. I thought about using aluminum but I think it'll strip. I also may have do some welding and other fucking around with it. I'm electrifying a Giant Stilleto.

If anyone has a steel square taper crank sitting in a junk box that they'd be willing to donate to good cause let me know.

    Thanks

Are you making a front freewheel crank?

NlytendOne - The Stilleto has 2 BBs one at the front with cranks, and one in the middle that essentially is an idler. It has 2 chains that, one turns the middle BB, the other is turned by the BB and in turn turns the rear cassette. I'm going to freewheel one of the cogs on the middle BB so that when I run the motor I don't have my pedals spinning. The motor has a freewheeling sprocket on it so that when I pedal I don't turn the motor with my pedal power. I'm mounting a 1000W 36V DC permanent magnet motor one the bike, I've got 3 x 12v sealed lead acid batteries with a total of 12 amp hours storage. SLA batteries output droops as they discharge so It'll go like hell at first then just go as the batteries discharge. After I prove to myself that it works I'm going spend $300 or so and put NiMH batteries on it, their discharge curve is much flatter than SLA.

Mntlion - I've got a friend, coworker and lurker (payote) passing through Banff today and again on the last weekend in August. I'll see if I can get a hold of him. where could he find you? It doesn't matter if I get a right or left or a matched pair, it is going on a lathe anyways to be turned into a threaded nub. What do you want for them?

I just called him and he is unable to stop in Banff today but may be able to on his way home in a week. I'll keep you posted. Thanks.

I need to send some stuff out to my sister in Rossland, if that's close enough to you I may be able to swing by Mntlions and get the stuff that far for you.
Assuming our buddy can't do it for you.

    Woah.

That sounds badass. I think that I might have a Monty trials crank right arm, which is already threaded for a freewheel. If I do, it's aluminum and square taper. If I'm picturing this right, that may work if you cut most of the crank arm off and then spin it to perfection on the lathe?

Maybe not. Anyway, I'll check and see.

I just wanted to stop in and let you guys know that the proper machining term is turn or turning not spining for (most-depending) OD lathe work and boring for ID. But you got the threading part right.

Sounds pretty cool Beaver. Like to hear how it works out.
