I know lots of people with tattoos who don't have any regrets. Maybe the people who get them while seriously wasted will live to regret it, but just about everyone I know with tattoos still really likes them. And no, I'm not talking about people who got them in the last year or two. I've had mine for ....holy crap....14 years and I still love them.

As long as you don't rush into it impulsively or go overboard with it, you're fine, IMHO.

Hmmm, I must totally suck - I've got two, both with Japanese characters that say something to me and I don't regret them at all. Had one done 15 years ago and the other 7.

Something to think about. I made my decision, got them in places that are "acceptable" for work and career and I have a plan to get at least one more, again, in a place where they could only be see in a tank top. I have no regrets and I don't feel I ever will.

I personally think tats on legs are not very attractive. But it is your body.

I believe it was Marcus Camby (or some Knick player) who got some Asian characters put on him; he was into the 'message' of the characters, although of course he couldn't understand what they said.

Turns out somewhere along the line a mistake was made, and the characters didn't say anything like what he intended. Never found out how he felt about that, but it sure makes me wonder. I'd probably avoid wearing a hat that said something I couldn't understand, let alone getting it permanently attached to my skin. But that's just me.

I conveniently had a Japanese friend that was able to verify the characters (she actually designed the tattoos for me), I've often wondered how often that happens, though.

When I was at basic/AIT I can't tell you how many tats I drew for kids. At the time (not sure if it's still the case) tattoo parlors were illegal in Oklahoma and everybody had to cruise down to Texas when we were on pass. Most of the Tats were of this retarded Drill Sergeant looking Bull Dog. We were the 4th Platoon Dog Pound. It was only 4 months of training and life. I wonder how many of those kids are regretting it now.

While on a shoot in Miami one of the better looking models had a tat on her ankle that was also a Kanji. The symbol meant strength. She had it doen right after a total personal breakdown that occurred after some loved ones died on 9-11. She said it took her a long time get over those issues and it reminds her everyday to be strong. The whole dialog came in a lovely french accent. That was the first tattoo that seemed completely bad ass IMHO. Ink with a story is cool. BTw, we covered the tat with make-up for the shoot.

The Mrs says she wants one. She said she wants a snowflake. Two of her sisters have tats. They're pretty lame tats though (tweety bird, WTF?).

There have been numeroustimes when I'm loaded that I want to go get tats and die my hair neon red or shave it off or pierce something. It's weird. Luckily I've never given into any of those impulses. I have 0 tats, 0 piercings and plenty of scars.

I agree that it's personal and I also agree with buzz, that having the ability to tuck it away is a nice option as well.

Absolutely. It's very helpful to be able to expose it or hide it at will.

One of my activist friends has the symbol for "revolution" on her wrist. So when people ask her what time it is, she looks at her wrist, smiles and says, "It's time for a revolution." I love that one.

My buddy in Hawaii passed out and some guys hauled him into a shop for the sweetest tat I've ever seen. It was a copy of a drawing from an Elton John album (yeah, I know...). It was a dagger and dice witha scroll through it that said 'Saturday night's alright for fighting'. Fit the guy to a T.

The other was a guy with a rooster in a noose on his calf. He won a lot of bets.

I got my first tat in march for my birthday...i waited 10 yrs to do it because i was so afraid of it hurting like a bitch. I have to say...it wasnt too bad...more of an annoyance for 45 minutes. I got a pink rose and a blue rose with intertwined stems with my kids names above and below them...its kinda big...about 4.5"x3.5" I got it on the outside of my left leg...i like them on the legs...i have pretty muscular legs so it looks good..ifidosaysomyself I do agree with the person who said abpout them being on the legs and showing...i had to go to a wedding in may and had on a skirt and heels...no pantyhose...and damn if i didnt get quite a few remarks especially from family members about why i got it there...i dont regret it at all...just have to wear pantyhose next time...LOL. I cant wait to get another
