    relocating advice e ===> w

this city is really wearing me down and i can't come up with a good reason (long term) as to why i'm still here. above all, i really want pick my up life and plop it down over by the seattle/pnw area. i miss that place everytime i leave. i've got a few friends i can bunk with if i move there so living arrangements aren't an immediate issue. at the risk of oversimplifying, is it best to:

    1) scout for job leads, find some contacts, gather a nest egg, move, job search actively and interview

    or

    2) job search actively, fly out for interviews, land one and then move

this is the first time i've ever seriously considered moving this far and changing almost every aspect of my life. the last move i made was from philly to nyc and that's nothing... and countless times within nyc. i know there's no hard and fast rule but for those of you who have made a big exodus, what have you done to facilitate the process and what were your results?

Move, get any kind of job for some cash, while looking for a more desirable job.

You might think about posting the type of work you're looking for.

    You should PM HONC.

He "cowboy'd up" in a big way and left the city behind. Probably a good resource.

currently i'm working at an art gallery doing lots of selling, designwork, art handling, photography, artist relations, registrar duties and anything that comes my way. my previous jobs have been pretty much in the realm of art... darkroom printing to non-profit arts coordination.

lots of what i have done broaches upon lots of generic job descriptions (sales, marketting, bookkeeping, pr, etc), but i have never done one thing exclusively. not sure if that hurts my chances or not.

i know there's plenty of art up in the pnw but i haven't pulled the trigger on the few jobs that do come up, esp. at the seattle museum of art. any other museums or galleries of note? also any jobs peripheral to the arts would be good to know if anyone has any ideas. selling art is a bitch, as are the clients.

thx... i'm really appreciating all the advice.

Move first, get a job for cash flow. It'll help you meet people. Get to know the city, then go on the job hunt propa. Otherwise, you're moving for the job which sounds like exactly what you don't want to do. Plus, it seems like the best time to take an extended vacation is between jobs. Enjoy yourself and take the time to rejuvinate before the next job.

selling art in the PNW is going to be much smaller potatos.
i went to school as an art major in the area. couple friends stuck around, they do video stuff. i'll see if i can get a handle on the hot galleries at the moment for you (this would be pdx not seattle)

Sounds like me. Ever do any sales?

Seattle art museum is undergoing gargantuan expansion. Lots of potential there. Hiring is done via commitee, so process can be a pain in the ass.

Henry art gallery hires fairly regularly, but has UW student pool to hire from, so don't expect to make any money.

If/when you get closer to making a move, I can put some feelers out for gallery (tough to find) and/or design-related admin/support positions, if that's what you're after.

My brother and sister-in-law own a small gallery on Main Street in Park City. I could ask them if they're looking for some fresh talent.

You'll only be 871.48 miles from Seattle

True, but it's still a hell of a commute.

What are ya waiting for? We're still skiing out here

But seriously, I've moved around quite a bit and really haven't known anyone before moving. Life's meant to be an adventure and meeting new people is part of that.

Do what you need to do to keep yourself happy. Because where you live is as much of a trade off as salary.

Good Luck on the move! If you need any help from the Seattle end, drop a PM. The job market here can be tough. May also want to check out http://www.seattletimes.com for the classifieds.

mcwop n foggy: i forgot to include that as an option. i guess it's the only way to go, anything else is going to take way too long and i wouldn't be able to make definite plans otherwise.

    bandito: willdo.

basom: yea i know. i don't enjoy selling but that is the only area where the $$$ is in art, unfortunately. anything else moves very......very slowly no matter where you're located which is fiiiine by me. i'd definitely consider pdx. i have a friend who really loved working at bullseye and misses the pnw as much as i do. imma be by there this summer to check it out anyway.

optics: this job is primarily sales, and selling supercedes anything that i may have on my plate. i've been checking sam regularly and will definitely take you up on whatever leads you may have.

squirrel: outa the two weeks i spent in the pnw this winter skiing around whistler, baker and stevens, i definitely had much more fun in wa.

i couldn't agree more. i know that whatever i do there will be a paycut and it's worth it. give me mountains over buildings anyday besides the ny skyline ain't what it used to be.

there's something about the people in the pnw and bc that i can't find anywhere else. plus i'd like to impregnate many canadian women.

sometime in late august i'll be in seattle to scout some more and do some camping; labor day weekend is pixies in or. i'm prolly gonna do the move during the spring next year. just enough time to clean up things around here, collect my christmas bonus and leave without letting my boss feel gipped. i'll make it up to you all somehow when i get there, name your price.
