Finally, you have to think about the history of motorsports on both sides of the pond. US motorsports evolved as circletrack-->nascar in the South(who needs handling when you can steer the car by throttle) and on the west coast with dry lakes racing and its emphasis on straight line speed. These images of small block V8s and 426 hemi's is part of the american experience, and has definately shaped the development of the car in this country.
Some of my favorite vintage Speedvision re-runs are when the big Galaxies battle it out with the Cortinas. Talk about a clash of culture.
