    Please keep your ride safe

There are a lot of people getting their bikes stolen lately (Arty, MD, BCF).

Please keep your ride safe. Don't leave it in your car, on top of your car, in front of your house, or anyplace but inside your locked house or garage out of sight of the windows. Not even for a minute. If you have to go eat or go indoors, U-lock it or bring it in with you.

My bike's been sitting in the back of my car for over a month. You got me worried now, think it's time to move 'er to the storage facility.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

    I almost became a victim.

We left both our mountain bikes on top of my truck coming back from Telluride last week; it was really, really late when we rolled in to Grand Junction, and I wasn't taking them down- the car was full of gear, and the forks were well locked into the rack, and the key was in my pocket. The hotel was OK, nothing great.

We get up the next morning, get in the car, and I make a right turn and hear something strange coming from the roof - so I pull over, and check it out.

Someone totally tried to steal our bikes- the nut holding the forks on was as loose as it would go, but thankfully, the lock stopped it from loosening enough to come off. Now, neither bike is worth more than $600, but it would still have sucked to have them stolen.

Moral of the story - locking racks work, but next time, I'm going to run my chain lock through both bikes, and the rack, if I can't bring the bikes inside.

Or even better- take it out and ride the damn thing

Actually, when I lived on campus in college I used to store my road bike in the back of my car. It was a choice between the car or the fraternity house. Figured it was safer in the car.
