SD Beta needed, Custer State Park

I leave for a trip to SD with the family next week and intend to do a little fishing in Custer State Park/surrounding area while we're out there. We're staying at the Game Farm Lodge in Custer for the bulk of our trip and I know there is one decent trout stream running through the property but I don't want to overlook a gem. I'll be leaning towards fishing early or late 'cause I'll do more harm if I happen into a hungry trout during the heat of the day. We'll also be spending some time around Devils Tower, mostly climbing but is there anything I should hit up that way? Fly suggestions are also welcome, the earlier the better because I'm painfully slow at the vice.

    Thanks!

Can't offer you any firsthand knowledge but fishing anywhere in that area, (unless you take a trip over to the Bighorn), is likely to be an early morning and right before dark type deal. It's been hot up there! I'd find a fly shop in Billings or in Rapid City....they should point you in the right direction.

Your best bet is to stop in Rapid City and hit up a fly shop called "Dakota Angler and Outfitter." They will steer you in the right direction. It will be warm there but the area around Custer State park is fairly high elev. and should be a little cooler than the surrounding area. Good luck, tell the owner the anchorage,ak connection sent you.

I want to say the last issue of Fly Fisherman Magazine had a bit on Custer State Park... I will need to find it when I get home this evening.

Hey thanks guys, we're staying at the State Game ranch in Custer and the Cooliage runs right in front of the little cabin we rented. I have a vision of a cooler full of beer and my fly rod wet wading until well after dark. The Dakota angler has some decent reports and my local fly shop closed it's door due to being surrounded by Cabelas so I'll have to stop in there anyway and pick up a few things. I've heard great things about SD and that I will have to search hard for another angler because there's very little pressure. Should be a nice little trip. If I have any luck I'll post up a little fish porn.
