Another snowboarder here

Given the BC terrain in the east, I'm not sure I can justify the splitboard purchase. But just in case I've been lurking on the Couloir forum to figure out which system works best.

bcrider's video clips may force me to cave in here in the next couple of months.

i am a snowboarder and have a split board - doutone 162 - never used it. i bought it off a dude i met on the lift for $100 w/ skins and haven't put it to use yet. still working on proper bc knowledge.

i also thought doutone made suntan lotion.

As long as this thread has been revived, I'll chime in.

Took my skis off one day at the end of the season 4 years ago to try snowboarding. I haven't had skis on since.

Burton Omen Split 170 (K2 approach skis before that), but I usually just bootpack.

After destroying my knees with several decades of alpine skiing, I switched over to trashing my ankles on the board.

Ouch, it pains me to see that done to an old Eldorado.

But I really should put one of my four worn out Eldos under the saw this winter and make it into a split. Although then I won't be able to make that nice red/white/blue picnic table I was planning.

Hey ripzalot,

Prior offers the widest production splits right now. They can also make custom splits as can Never Summer. What size boot do you wear? One thing to consider is that if you go too wide, the skis will also be wide in split mode. If the skis are too wide, traversing can be difficult. You might not be able to use the splitboard crampons either.

The splitboard interface that your bindings attaches to also sets you about .25iches higher off your board so toe and heel drag is less of an issue than with a standard board.

I went to the K2 Clicker HB 4 or 5 years again when I got more into backcountry and less into jibbing. The HB for me is a great set up. It has the step-in convenience yet still offers a traditional strap binding/soft boot feel. The highback support is on the binding like it should be, not built into the boot. The system is quick and easy to use and it even accepts a crampon.

A lot of splitboarders use hardboots for the added benefits (edging) in tour mode and some splitboarders use mountaineering boots for their benefits while boot packing or crampon-ing.

I haven’t made the switch to either and don’t plan on it anytime soon until the options get better.
(but it may be sooner than later as K2 Clicker HBs aren’t made anymore)

i wear a size 13. straps bindings and clickers (hard to find clickers my size). i like the wide boards for the float as well. and if its crusty or hard, losing an edge due to toe dig is no fun.

Throw a tape measure on the waist of your boards or check the specs online.

I want to start being able to access more bc and have been thinking of going back to skiing.

Splitties seem more popular in north america than on this side of the Atlantic despite the pioneering Nitro split which was around in Y'rupe in the mid-90s.

My BC snowboard guru is convinced that light plastic snowshoes really are the way to go. He climbs 50degree slopes straight up on his shoes although I can often distance him on nice 25degree drags, especially when there is deep pow. The big advantage is a performant snowboard which can be really nice given the changable conditions you can find in the BC. The pic below shows Steph on the hard snow we found at around 10,000 feet on the Point de Cerces near la Grave.

I think the snowboard/skier conflicts are a bit overdone to be honest... chacun sa trace as we like to say here.

anyone ever make a splitboard themselves? i am getting a new stick this year and was thinking about putting my old fella under the knife. i have the binding hardware already...

i guess the biggest problem would be not having an edge on the cut side.

Don't have a splitboard but I'm gonna start doing some BC this year here in Utah.
