You're right, and Bob Mould still kicks ass. But if I had to pick one only one band formed in Minneapolis in 1979 I'd go with The Replacements and Paul Westerberg. Fortunately I don't have to choose.

I really liked The Replacements up until they kicked magnificent alcoholic Bob Stinson out. I got bonked in the head really hard by a flying piece of a Telecaster at a mats show once. Or maybe that was Soul Asylum. I can't remember.

Kinda-cool "fun fact" about Bob Mould: after Husker Du ended, he spent years working for the WWF writing scripts for the matches.

Like, "Savage has Hulk by the hair and pushes him through the ropes, Hulk reaches down and picks up a chair, but Elizabeth sees what he is doing and rushes over, grabbing a chair on the way. She passes the chair to Savage, who..."

Seriously. That's how he made his living for quite a while.

I know Greg Norton (bass player w/ the killer 'stash) owns a restaurant in some town in WI right on the Mississippi west of Eau Claire (where I got smashed in the head with the guitar part). Come to think of it, I think that was a Soul Asylum show. Didn't Dave Pirner play a Tele that he glued back together after every show? I got a bloody nose too.

Anybody remember Die Kruezen? The were from WI around the same time. My highschool girlfriend thought they were called "Die Cruisin'". How about Inner City Sasquatch?

Ah, my youth. We used to hit all these shows. The 80's were a great time to be growing up in MPLS. You'd hit a Replacement's show on a Friday, then the Femmes would roll over from MILW for a Sat all ages show at 1st Ave, then spend your weekdays waiting around to be an extra in Purple Rain. If you look closely in one of the club scenes you can see my hand. My personal favorite was the Replacements but was also a big fan of the Suburbs. One of my favorite un-known Replacement songs off their Hootenanny album was Buck Hill. Gotta love a good punk song about a goofy little ski hill in the midwest. Picked it up on Itunes about a year ago. In addition to great local music we had some unreal shows come through. My personal favorite was seeing U2 when I was in 7th grade at 7th Street Entry(First Ave's little stage). Sat on the edge of the stage next to Bono's monitor. I really liked Husker Du but they rarely played the all ages shows so I only got to see them a few times. The Suburbs were always playing a dance or something at my High School. I used to cook at a restaurant in Eden Prairie when I was a senior, breakfast shift. The Suburbs would always roll in on Sunday mornings, real early and smellin of some serious partying. They'd sit around a drink coffee for a couple hours before the regulars would come in after church. Shit, I'm old. Someone mentioned the Wallets. They played at the Hyland Hills Ski Chalet as the opening act for Limited Warranty (first Star Search Winner). A buddy of mine's brother was the bass player and we'd always hit the Limited Warranty shows because they attracted the girls. Great place to meet up with drunk 15 year olds, hey we were only 16 so it's all good. Thanks Jer for the trip down memory lane!

Strong video for "Don't Want to Know if You are Lonely":

    Chartered Trips live. Fucking AMAZING.

The rest of this show is great too. New Day Rising:

For those who don't already know...Zen Arcade. Nothing like it has come before or since. Astounding.

Here's one from the Land Speed Record days, back when Husker Du were the fastest hardcore band in the world. You can't handle this one:

Bob actually played a bunch of Husker songs on his last tour: I Apologize, Divide and Conquer, Celebrated Summer, Chartered Trips, a bunch more, and closed the encore with...New Day Rising. It wasn't 1984 again, but it was as close as you're going to get.

Bob Mould regularly DJ's a show called "Blowoff" at the 930 Club in DC. Seems he's taking this on the road a bit:

Some tracks on their Myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/blowoffevents

Husker Du was great, as was Sugar.

Actually Mould wrote for the WCW (not the WWF, which ultimately pushed the WCW out of business). I remember interviewing him once and talking about it.

The first time I met him I screamed "You're the f@#kin' shit, man! I love your work!" and he got kind of embarrassed.

Next time I met him we were lunching in the Castro in SF and he was scoping out the "talent."

Dude is a veritable god, I always likened him to the Pete Townshend of the Mid-West, killer licks, insightful lyrics, unmistakable voice.

I believe his "Blowoff" events are his take on the gay disco party scene (at least that was my take on them and the subsequent album, which had a decidedly Euro pop/rock vibe to it).

For me it's all about Workbook. That's a damn near perfect album in my opinion.

Oh yeah, his solo acoustic shows kick ass.

Their cover of Eight Miles High may be their best work so far as I'm concerned. But Celebrated Summer will likely remain my favorite Husker Du song forever more.

Yeah - that song kicked ass. But wasn't it titled "Elizabeth, It's OK"? I've got all this shit on cassette somewhere, but I don't own a cassette player.

The song with the repeating arpeggiated riff off the same album was great as well - "Down" or "Low" or something.
