    He's gone.

In 7 years he has never not been here in the evening or morning. He usually sleeps on the bed with me but it is summer so he likes to be out hunting. Looks like this time he was the hunted. Living were I do it is something that I know is a very real possibility. I had 7 wonderful years with him. I was there when he was born and remember him specifically, he was the middle kitten of seven. Fluffier than the rest with a big white cross on his back which is typical for true tabbies (swirly pattern is a "true tabby"). I miss him so much. Life is gonna be a lot less furrier and purrier without his sweet face. Of all the cats I've had/have he loved to be held and cuddled. He would just melt in your arms and purr. He also loved Greek Gods honey yogurt and would sit in the kitchen until you noticed him and gave him a spoonful. Sigh.

    Condolences.

It goes against a lot of the overprotective bs to let them be outside, so props to you for letting him live the way he wanted.

He was born in a barn to a semi-feral mom, an outdoor cat from day one. For some reason he decided he wanted to be in the house with me so he came up from the barn one day and meowed at the window until I let him in and that was that. Still, he liked to be out and there was no deterring him. There would be times when I didn't want him to go out but he raised such high holy hell that we were both miserable so out he would go.

As I said I knew the risk. This was a day I feared and wished to avoid but it is .... life I guess. Out of that litter only three survive. Even the mother disappeared. I have one left, my GF in Woodinville has two (she had three but one died mysteriously - they call it "sudden cat death"). I have his two older siblings and his uncle who all live in the barn with his surviving brother. I also have a neighbor's cat that decided to move in when the neighbor got a dog. She lives in the house with me and has been wandering from room to room sniffing his things apparently looking for him.

Funny how some cats seem to survive outside forever. There is a feral tom that has been around here for years. Scruffy old thing. I finally trapped him and got him fixed and re-released him. He just keeps on keeping on. Then there is the female that came to me from a neighbor. She is outside 80% of the time as she was at my neighbors. Not entirely sure of her age but I'd put her at at least 14. Another one is my neighbor to the south. Their cat traipse across open wheat fields where I see coyotes all the time to come to my house for a visit.

Edit: I do provide my barn cats with as much protection as possible. The barn gets shut up at night and is well lit on the exterior. The cats have access via a cat door in the large breezeway doors and then there is another cat door that will let them get up into the hay loft. They can also hide in the hay stacks.

We have one that disappeared for a bunch of days (not like her at all, she comes in every night or on the porch every morning).

We think she got trapped in a neighbors garage. Do you know yours is gone for sure or just missing?

    Hoping yours returns soon.

At my inlaws place on Novelty Hill, they have at least 7 or 8 cats, 3 or 4 of which are outside only cats.

One of the inside/outside cats, Boo, has taken to staying outside a lot lately at night especially, and he's kind of a favorite.

Since there's a lot of coyotes roaming there's significant concern and a number of cats have disappeared over the years.

So there's been a lot of speculation about how Boo stays alive.

Just the other week with my wife and daughter staying there later working on the gardens and horses, on leaving they saw Boo ensconsed with my daughters horse.

The hypothesis is that he stays in that pasture all night, napping, mousing, being out, but the horse will stomp the butt of any coyote that enters the pasture. There are pictures of the cat riding on the back of the horse as well.

I'm wiping some tears. I miss my cats too and it's a reminder. It is good to remember them.

Just to keep it real and keep me focused I guess, both my female cats got sprayed by a skunk last night. The house cat (who brought her stink in with her) immediately got a bath with Nature's Miracle Skunk odor remover. The barn cat is just going to have to let it wear off. Whoo boy, the barn just reeked this morning! When I opened the breezeway doors I was hit with a wall of eau de skunk. Not sure what was going on last night but the ladies were up to something.

I've called the vet to let them know he's missing on the off chance he get's brought in (huge off chance but at least I know I tried).

One time Charlie got locked in my backyard shed for a couple days.

I have checked all my out buildings and called and called. I know he would answer me if he could. I've also checked two old abandoned homes within proximity to my place with no luck. I've walked fields and driven up and down the road. Nothing. Thing is he wasn't a cat to wander far. All the mousing and birding he would ever want is right here on my property but ufortunately so are coyotes and fox. He was fixed so no searching for a female either.

I appreciate all the positive thoughts and I would love to believe he would come back (a friend's cat came back after a year!) but the odds are stacked against that happening and I've already been through this with his mother, two siblings and an uncle. Still, I continue to call his name and hope I hear an answer.

    We get a cat.

    Our first pet ever.

My Dad grew up in Chicago and the stories he could tell about the Windy City in WW2 could make one both laugh and cringe.

To an Aunt in Minnesota, my father would get farmed out in the Summer and get a break from city life. He told a story about farm cats- and how they were only given cream each morning. My Dad got to know one cat well. Farm Cat was pretty feisty and earned his keep mousing w/cream. It was a real killer. Funny cat stories.

We've been glamming it up in a small cabin in Teton County. We're in the woods. We're overrun by country mice. Great skiing- every day of the season for me means tall grass and lots of cover. In classic literature the humble mouse is cute and helpful. In daily life? Not so much. Farm Cat ↑ is what we need.

Recently paroled from the city slammer, she was picked up as a stray- I'm not sure where. She's about ten months old. Lean and fast, she's explored every nook and cranny in the cabin like momma raptor in Jurassic Park.

The gal @ the pound said to leave her indoors for about a week so sees us as home base.

Stoke is high. The girls really enjoy her, very spunky.

I miss my mouser, Amber the killer cat. She made it to 21 before leaving us.

The replacement kittie is TG, Tiny Girl at a whopping 8lbs. Super sweet, but cries all the time. We figure she misses a friend at the shelter she was at for two years.

Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.
