As long as its within reason is my opinion. And that looks well within reason. I despise it when photographers edit things into a photo from another photo for example. I rented a book recently and 1/2 of the photos (it was a landscape book) had cloud formations edited into the sky because the original sky was boring Thats a pretty sweet picture anyways though.

    Fire

15s, f22, ISO 100 at 40mm. I'll admit that I put my hand in front of the lens before 15s was up -- I found that the flames get too washed out if exposed for the full 15s.

I feel like an ass for entering this contest as my first post but anyway, here they are. All at 15 seconds exposure.

    So you're saying it's not really a 15second exposure....

So some of those seconds were spent exposing the dark back of my hand. But what did we say about being a smartass?

I think this statement wins the arguement, and I love the picture by the way, really want to see which ones here make the 5

If you're going to block the lens with your hand, you might as well just close the shutter entirely.

How long were you exposing the fire? It almost looks like too much. I was playing around with a campfire a couple weeks ago and it seemed to be too much after 3 seconds or so (not overexposed, just didn't like how it looked).

Can anyone make these out? They look fine on my computer at home but at work they're so dark to barely be visible, and I'm hearing the same thing from a couple friends.

I agree with you. I was drunk and it was easier to leave it on the same setting and vary the time with my hands. The downside is that now I don't know what the "effective" exposure time was. I'm not going to be offended if it doesn't qualify for the contest, just thought it looked cool. It does look like a bulb exposure, it's just that my subject happened to be really bright so the full 15s would have blown it out to an amorphous orange halo.

Exposure time depends on what type of effect you're looking for -- I like the one above because the flames still have some shape but are really feathery. This one here was taken at 1/20 and is closer to what a fire looks like to the human eye:

They are a little dark I guess, but I can see everything just fine. I wouldn't change anything...

I can see them. They are a little dark, but thats what happens at night.

I like the second one best. Was the light source coming from the moon?

    Yep, all moonlit.

I like the second one best too, at least when I can see it. It's pretty clear with the stairs and the sign is legible, at least when I look at it from home.

Too late and inelligible anyway (taken July 11), but why not. Groton, CT moonlight... midnight.

I know these are all way too late but I had some bulb fun on a recent camping trip and wanted to share
My buddies by the fire. 8 second shutter @ 3.5 ISO 320

    A small Appalachian stream. 4 second shutter @ 8 ISO 100

Another small Appalachian stream. 5 second shutter @ 18 ISO 100

A 2 or 3 step GND filter would have worked wonders in this shot Squirrel

i feel like most of my photos get really washed out and overexposed when the exposure time is more than a few seconds. what are some tips for preventing this effect?

    1. Close the aperture more and/or:
    2. Use Neutral Density Filters.
if these don't work or aren't doable:
    3. Don't use such a long exposure time.

You cannot force a 10 second exposure if there is a lot of light unless you can reduce the amount of light hitting the sensor/film by either choking down the aperture or basically putting "sunglasses" on your lens. Unless it's within a stop or so this is not something you can fix in post.

Either shoot when its darker, or get a ND filter to block out some of the light.

Damn, beaten by the old guy...
