MPC#19: Bulb (July 16-July 23)

The Rules:

1. Photos must be taken within the time period of the contest.

2. You may submit 3 photos during the competition.

3. The contest moderator will choose 5 of the photos to put in a poll for the mags to vote on and decide the winner.

4. The winner will get a happy feeling in his/her pants. (That is a rule by the way not an option)

5. In the event of a tie, the contest moderator will have the deciding vote.

6. Winner will be the contest starter/moderator for the next comp.

Time to bust out your tripod or stability creativity. Only rule; all images must have an exposure of 15 seconds or longer. Have Fun

This *may* require that your camera's shutter speed dial is set to "B" or "Bulb" this means that when the camera is set to bulb, and the remote is attached, the shutter will be open as long as the remote switch is pressed. This allows you to take longer exposures than 30 seconds (which I think is the longest shutter speed for most cameras w/o the use of bulb and a remote or a very-very steady hand to hold the shutter button on camera).

Exactly. Bulb exposure not required as not all cameras have this setting, but I figure nowadays most P&S will at least allow for a 15" exposure.

Street lights.

I was looking down the street at a bunch of street lights, so the closer ones turned out brighter. I don't know why they're dotted lines - maybe street lights pulse?

Street lights are indeed strobe lights. Stare at the front tire of your bike when you're riding at night sometime and you can see the effect as you change speed, just try not to rear end a parked car...

This is the first time I have messed with any kind of "long" exposure. All I can say is that its harder than it looks.



We have a full moon, and I'm a little disappointed that this is the best I can come up with.

Thanks Those shots were actually pretty easy to do.

10%, the moon can be pretty tricky with long exposures. I don't do a ton of long exposures, but I know 15 seconds tends to be too long for moon shots. Try upping your ISO and using a smaller aperture, that might help (though the higher ISO = more noise). Or try changing your composition so the moon doesn't look overexposed, or so it looks overexposed on purpose... Like maybe shoot it through thicker trees, or reflected over water. But that's just my $.02. I think your shot is pretty neat - I like the color of the pine needles. It's always cool to see how colors turn out in long exposures.

Good choice, been meaning to bust out the tripod anyways. First one is from the full moon ride in Austin. Every full moon a big party on wheels meets up at midnight and cruises around town for a while. Always good fun, plenty of beer and whatnot. Guess there was close to 150-200 at the start this time. Any where else do this? Tried to get a shot of everyone streaming by but fucked it up a couple times and the others were under 15 sec. Other two are after the ride, had a cool sky with some fast moving clouds.

1.5 hrs, this is after 3 tries of my battery not lasting long enough to record the image but long enough to close the shutter

The light pollution was from lights I couldn't block because I had forgoten my lens hood as well as a brief slip up with a porch light. This was my first star trail ever
