possibly WTB - Large Arbor 7wt or 8wt reel (cheap)

Anybody have a large arbor reel, 7wt or 8wt they would be willing to part with fairly cheap? I have never used a large arbor reel and want to check one out. Line/backing on it would be nice, but if not I am still interested. Basically I was hoping for something cheap here. Willing to trade something too.

depending on your definition of 'cheap' the lamson konic is probably my next reel.

That's an excellent reel for the price!

Another favorite of mine is Danielsson, ( http://www.danielsson-flyreels.se ).
They should still have a US rep. ??? Good prices, (at least they used to be) for solid machinery.

Loop = Danielsson, from what I understand.

    Cabela's has Sage 1800 reels for $139 (7/8 wt, 4.12" dia.).

STP has Albright Popo Agie ELA reels for $84.96 (7/8)

    Those any good?

Well, the thing is - I am not hurting in the reel department - I have more reels than rods right now. A new reel is not a necessity for me. I am just curious about large arbor reels. I see them all over now. Are they kinda like the equivalent of fat skis in skiing? That's why I was thinking of getting a cheap used one - just to see the difference, etc.

I've heard that too but not from a credible source. Good solid product either way. It's tough to go wrong with Lamson though.

    Lemme 'splain my current set-up...

I don't currently have an 8wt rod, just the 7wt that I use almost every time out in most places. Basically, for my reel I have a very nice Orvis Battenkill 7/8. I love the reel, and it is spooled with an 8wt line, but the line is a tight fit. I was thinking of getting a large arbor 7/8 to use instead, but the Battenkill was a gift to me and I don't want to get rid of it (as in sell/trade it). I'm sure I would still use it from time to time, but I think a new large arbor would be my go-to reel on this rod - especially in the lakes.

    Current set up:

Other than looks, weight savings and picking up line quicker there is really no difference.

Don't wanna start a shouting match but drag systems vary quite a bit from reel to reel....company to company! Especially when you get to that size of reel.

I didn't want to get in to that, I knew seventytwo20 was just in it for looks.

what do you need a 7 or 8 weight for? just use a 6 and get a mid arbor. i use a six for everything heavy, amd a 5 for everything else. the mid arbor is a great reel, so if you're set on whorvis I imagine the large arbor would feel similar

I can't believe you use that Battenkill in that weight. The drag on it sucks. I have one, albeit much smaller, and only use it for appropriate sized fishies. Try a larger reel with a more advanced drag, you'll fall in love. Also, going to a mid/large arbor is really a no brainier if you need to buy a new reel.

I think you may enjoy a LA machined reel with a different drag as compared to the Orvis BK. I have a Redington AL 7/8 in Gold that I do not use. It's a new reel that was being discontinued during the Redington-Orvis-Sage transition. Not the best drag but it is okay and a definate step up from the BK. I would part with it for an even $100 shipped. PM if interested in a pic etc...

    Trigger = pulled.

Just ordered the Albright Popo Agie ELA 7/8 from STP. Got it for under a hundred bucks and ordered a line from there too. I should have it sometime next week.

Holy crap, that was fast! Reel delivered today! I ordered it less than 24hrs ago and paid for standard shipping (3 to 6 days). I guess it helps to live fairly close to the warehouse.
