Toyota pickup speedometer problem

1994 Toyota pickup

Once the car heats up the speedometer goes crazy (up to 110 down to 0 and everywhere in between). Sometimes it settles back at the actual speed, but it can be about 10 minutes until it does. It has gotten worse in the last year. When I bought it I was told it would be $250 to fix, but I want to know what the actual problem is, and if I can fix it myself for less $.

I'd imagine you'd need a speedo cable. Not too hard to do if you're comfortable with taking the cluster loose. The lower part of the cable is the easy part, just unscrew it from the trans and take it loose from a couple of stays. To get the cable off the cluster you have to take the dash apart a bit to get the cluster loose.

I'd go with the dealer for the part, they should have them in stock.

My old Toyota did the same thing and it was indeed the speedo cable.

A brake cable or shifter cable from a bicycle will work in a pinch...if you don't want to goto a dealer for the parts.

hey if it goes to 0 more than it goes to the top speed, just leave it until you're about to get rid of it. When the speedo stops working, the clock stops ticking. If its a standard, you can probably drive it by ear anyways. If you must fix it, it's probably a quick harness solder like mine was (part=$15) . Dash surgery is gay, but overall a very easy fix.

Sold it awhile ago. I prefer the bed space of the pickup.
