I headed out to Mission Beach with 2 non-maggot friends to give surfing a try. We booked a shithole condo a block from the beach, walked up the boardwalk and I took my 1st lesson. Hearing how difficult surfing is, I was going to be happy just being able to stand up by the end of the lesson. Fortunately, I was able to stand up on my 2nd wave and ride it in to shore...and then I was hooked. We surfed the following 3 days for about 4 hours a day, only quitting when the muscles gave out. After 4 days of getting your ass kicked on tiny waves, you sure can appreciate the big wave surfers.
I originally posted a question about whether surf lessons were worth the money and received varying opinions:

Despite the fact that the instructors didn't really give me much new info compared to the internet videos I watched prior to the trip, they did let you know when to start paddling to catch a wave and stand up (no push offs). In the following days it really paid off to watch the locals and luckily we didn't get in their way.
