Splitting time between Kilgore and home. Taking advantage of my downtime and spending it with family. Early morning or evening rides are incredibly beautiful and the exercise doesn't hurt.

Called out to the McKinney Fire �� in northern California. Sure to be another wild adventure.

Enroute to fire. U joint failure. Front driveline fell down pointed forward on the road at 65 mph. Gravel berm from new road construction made it hard to pick a spot to get off the road. When I finally did pull to the right, the driveline dug in and bucked me into the air a bit. Picked up pieces of transfer case off the road. Redbull all over the windshield on the inside....

Near Juntura OR. No cell signal. Good Sam relayed message to Boss back in IdahoFalls. Tow truck to me within 3 hours. Back in Ontario OR by noon. Son from Nampa picked me up and we got another crew pickup, same one we used in NM Belongs to our dozer operator. He also lives in Nampa. Stayed at my sons place and got up early this morning and finished the trip. Got to see granddaughter Winnie too... so cute...

Saw a big black bear last evening on our way back out of the hills. Fat and sassy!

It is exceptionally beautiful here. Strange how a fire can be so destructive and simultaneously so beautiful at times. I've pondered about this many an occasion. A fire is not malicious, unless deliberately set by asswipes.

Also, the forests I have been around in N California seem overgrown and somewhat sick. Not sure sick is the right word and am at a loss to find the right adjective to describe what I observe. The lack of rains over the last few years isn't helping.

It doesn't take long to realize things are not well in California. I spent a good bit of time this summer in Lake/Humboldt/Mendocino county. The further you got from the coast, the sicker it seemed.

I stayed on a property in Cobb that had been cleaned and is maintained for fire safety. They use all the timber removed from the property to fire the kiln. Proof of concept a few years back, fire line stopped a few feet short of structures.

Home from the fires again. Trip home was leisurely and enjoyable. Left Yreka around noon on August 15, spent the night camped in one of the best places to watch the Milky Way and shooting stars blaze across the night sky.

East of Burns Oregon. Slept out under the stars. 74f was the low. Nice.
