No one took me up on the eagles. Oh well. I attribute that to perhaps not all that many are close by, or maybe nobody gives a shit about eagles ;-), what do I know? And thanks for continuing to read. I try to entertain, 'cuz, well.... that is what this internet is all about. I have stories. I should tell them. And I will, Right now.
Between now and the next time I break the board out I'll hit on subjects more spring/summer/fall-ish like.
As Yellowstone has been in the news lately, I'll start there. Don't EVER go to Yellowstone in the summer. Don't even bother to go in the spring unless you are local enough to pick your days. If it is a once in a lifetime trip, do it in the fall. The later the better. You won't have all the amenities in the park, but who cares, every place around the park does. West, Gardiner, Cooke City. Fill your tanks before heading in.
But, that's not what I want to talk about. What I have to tell you will perhaps be controversial, but keep in mind, this was the 70's Yellowstone, much, much different, from this Yellowstone of today. Changes were coming, and soon, but actual change took a while to catch up to policy. All for the good. But....the $1000 fine for collecting thermal water? Yeah, he probably had that one coming.
But I must confess, though I never collected thermal water, nor did I ever walk across delicate thermal features, nor did I entertain the idea of loading up a red dog, or even boil myself in a hot as fuck pool at Norris, I did in fact soak in a 110 degree pool, in an undisclosed location in the park. Many times. Been many years since then. 40 to be exact. The last time I was there a while back I took a look at it again, for old times sake. Still looks the same. But that was in the daytime. Night time early in the spring when there was still snow on the ground in places. Wisps of steam issuing from the hillside with vapor whispering across the water. The stars like you seldom see them. Some girls from Bozeman showed up once. A beer or two. Yeah. Magic.
Never hurt a thing, left no garbage or tracks, we knew what we were doing, and we wanted to be able to continue doing it. Without fucking shit up. But those days are gone. Sigh......... like I said, all for the good.
