Hey LBL, You ever hit the lines above Meadow Lake? I've been meaning to the past couple years, but haven't gotten there early enough. Probably need to shoot for earlier this year.

Love that area. Dumb question--what's the distinction between the White Knobs and the Pioneers?

Meadow Lake? Why yes, last July

We were one of the first to drive the road into the campground, only opening that morning, a sign of the big winter. The big Meadow Lake cirque provides lots of options.... just pick one!

And Thanks! Doctor thinks it was just fluke. I am sure he thinks I doubled up on that one med, ....I will provide him with a record of a twice daily BP measurements the next time I go in...

The Knobs are mostly sedimentary, where much of the east facing Pioneers are granite, the western slope granite covered with broken sedimentary/metamorphic rock. You are right, the Pioneers are off to the right in this shot, but still south of the Trail Creek road.

Thanks! Yep ok , again. My life has been pretty wild lately. Shit happens. A lot. I said a while back, I said that I hadn't changed, that I was the same as before. I now see that it isn't so. I have changed. I will not die before I get some shit done. Not if I can help it. Too damn much to do. There is a greater urgency now and I ain't getting any younger.... and all that.

The natural world fascinates me, and always has. I find myself outside more. Everyday I try to find something to marvel at.

Though there is still some snow in the mountains, it gets further away each day. I have all but given up on dragging the board around. Still, the thought of the distant winter gives me hope for many days of deep pow to come. Most of the people I know hate winter. A deep dark void in their life if you ask me. I can't imagine how that must feel. What they don't know they can't miss I suppose.

Climb and Hike and Bike. Summer isn't all bad, though I deal with the cold better than the heat. It was 78 today, and I thought it was hot. Sheesh. The summer sunsets are frikin' awesome though...... they don't come much better than this....

I love hiking up to this highpoint. The sun goes down behind the Lems this time of year, the longest day of the year coming up in about a month. Love them long days.

    Mountain flowers are out.

Even the lowly dandelion is beautiful...

I will leave you with one more.... the down climb and then home....

So the Knobs are closer to the Copper Basin and the Pioneers are in between there and Ketchum?
I thought the core of the high peaks were metamorphic. I did a geology course out there and I should know more about it than I do! Haha. It's been a long time, I could be wrong.

When I got home that evening, I saw that the owl was on the rooftop of the house across the street. I pointed it out to one of my sons. As I lifted my arm to point, the owl flew off the roof, directly towards me and, no shit, landed on my shoulder. Imagine my suprise!

It stayed around the house for a week or so, coming to us everytime we went outside. I eventually called the Fish and Game and they came out, caught it and relocated it to a more remote location......

That means, of course, that Owl is your "tornak"...or guardian animal spirit (sometimes spelled "tornaq")....just as Raven and Red-tailed Hawk are both my tornak.

When a tornak presents himself to you in that manner, he becomes your guardian tornak in spirit...and that spirit will remain to guide you for the rest of your days. Most people have tornaks, it's just that most are simply oblivious of them and don't know or see when one presents himself.

I was presented with a tornak in similar manner twice...once a red-tailed hawk...and once a raven. Hence, they are both my tornaks.

The Knobs are generally seen from Hwy 93. As you travel up the Big Lost River north of Arco the big peaks of Idaho loom overhead to the east. The White Knobs are hidden until you are almost into Mackay.

There is a history of mining..... Copper and small amounts of silver and gold were discovered in the eastern slopes of the White Knobs in 1879.
John W. Mackay of San Francisco , an important member of an collection of miners who had developed Virginia City's major Comstock property, became interested in the area and convinced the Union Pacific to build a line from Blackfoot, Idaho to his mine in the White Knobs. As a mining center, the town of Mackay rapidly increased to a population of approximately 1,200 when rail service arrived at the area in 1901.
Over the years the effect of the depression and increasing costs associated with processing low grade ore caused the gradual decline and end of the mining activity. There is ample evidence of the mining in and around the Rio Grande Canyon area just west of present day Mackay.

A couple of buddies went up a few days ago and climbed/skied/snowboarded Redbird Mtn. Looks like they had a good time.

That pano..... I see Old Hyndman and other high peaks. Awesome! Here is a shot looking the other way..... Castle in the White Clouds way off in the distance...

That is my buddy Craig Kantack. He was the one who got me scrambling the high peaks of Idaho way back in the 80s'. Still doing it today.

I remember the North Face of DBE was pretty gnarly for a guy who is mostly a hiker. Big chunks of what looked like marble cake, stripes of different colored minerals twisted up into Volkswagen sized rocks near the top. Some of them tipping when you stood on them. Yikes!

And yes, it is looking up Boulder Lake Canyon!

Climbed Hyndman a year or so later. Much easier high point. Did Phi Kappa with one of my boys also.

One year I climbed up to the ridge looking down into Wildhorse, lots of snow for the time of year.....and an awesome view.

    I lied....

Top to bottom with one little gap close to the bottom.... Tate hauled ass 50 ft over grass and mud to connect to the last stretch of snow.... me .... tried and failed. I forgot to lean waaaay back. Duh. Knees/ass/elbows suffered a bit.

We had fun. Felt great to be able to carry my (split) to the top. I was worried that I might suffer a repeat of Lost River Peak. The closer I got to the top, the better I felt!! Frikin' awesome!!

Been a while, thought I would check in. Summer = here. Nothing I can do about it so....got to make the most of it.

    Late May.....

The kids have instructions to spread my ashes here....

Not always, but sometimes I take the dogs here for an evening walk.

    June....
Watching the second batch of Robin babies...

The nest was built inside the string cover of my weed wacker..... I'm not using it this year, apparently.

Hiking... Tate and Debbie refilling the water bottles...

    The destination!

    Bullwinkle Jr.

    Spidey

    July....
Sister came for her annual visit. Brought the new Mini Roadster. Drove it like a Boss.
Monday we took a trip through the Park. Over the pass on the way home that afternoon. So much fun we did it twice.

    Bullwinkle Sr.

    Big Boys...

    Sunrise...

Summer is OK, but I am waiting patiently for the snow to fly again.....
