forget about global warming, how 'bout local warming?

specifically, in the American West. does it exist? does it matter? does it provide support or contradiction toward theories of global warming?

I wouldn't mind a little local warming right now.... It's almost June, and I have had my boat out once. It is about 50 right now. Tomorrow is supposed to get up to 65 or so...

    I'm ready for some 80's.

Shit dude, be glad you've had your boat out! The lake un-froze here 2 weeks ago and the water is still too far down to launch boats at either of the marinas, becuase the fucking snowmelt release was done a little bit too soon, and not much snow has melted to bring the lake back up yet.

a semi-real answer: Certain regions are going to be more affected by global warming than others. I recall that the American West is going to get hotter and drier (read: the skiing will not be awesome). I think I read that in "Collapse" by Jared Diamond of all places, although that's not what the book is about. Good thing "teh global warmings" is fake.

Saw it was a comfy 75 here in Elm Grove, but only 57 in Rhinelander... you've gotta be a degree or two colder than that yet for the high?
If some of the best times of my life were skiing the UP in -40 wind chill with nothing but jeans, cotton long johns and a wine flask to keep warm while sleeping in the back of my dad's van... does that make me old school?

Your forgetting that Jared Diamond is an idiot and the laughing stock of academia.

Weather.com says it was 50 here yesterday, that seems a bit low, but whatever it was I was chilling in the backyard wishing I had a new boat.

Can you expand on that? I didn't know that, but I don't know anything about him other than his Guns, Germs, and Steel is on my shelf, still unread.
    Should I bother?

Bother? yes of course, but keep in mind he is finding examples to fit his conclusion, rather then vice versa. I found this to be more true in Collapse. Most of my colleagues and profs just laugh at his mention.

Read it? Yes. Be critical? Most certainly. I would be interested to see what you think.

I think Geographic Determinism is simply a cop-out (and its sibling environmental) and has no where near the importance that Diamond and others have assigned to it.

Every book deserves to be read, regardless of what you think of it!
