    Midwest Avi Class Season II

Last year we had a great time/mini summit at Afton Alps. Yeah we probed in dirt, and used leaves and brush to hide beacons, but we had a hell of a good time and I got to meet up with mags from across the midwest, from as far away at TX via U of NE. Anyway season two. I know a number of you were interested last year but the date didn't work out for you. So here's plenty of notice.

The Western Region of the National Ski Patrol is hosting the Avalanche Fundamentals & Rescue class Sunday Sept 21st at Welch Village. The course is $25 and include materials and the use of equipment (probes and beacons). This isn't a traditional Avi I course but is a nice overview with some practical field work to get you started. It also will allow you to attend the NSP Avi II in Utah if you are interested. You DO NOT need to be a ski patroller to attend.

More details: the class will run just one LONG day this year from 9am-6pm. And as an added bonus, I'll be one of the instructors this year so feel free to come and give me shit as this will be my first time teaching this course. Registration must be recieved no later than Sept 6th in order to get the course materails and a pre-test to you in time. PM me if you are interested. Include an email address so that I can get you the registration info. And as always, if anyone is interested in a Sat night event, there are plenty of options available and of course I have couch space avail as well if you're traveling in from out of state.

Hope to see a bunch of Mags there.

    Jay

Sounds like making a great use of what's available -- being in southern New England, I can definitely identify with that!

This is going to change for the coming 2008-09 season, as Level 1 (which is going to change to three days, or equivalent hours) will be the minimum requirement for Level 2.
Still unclear is whether AFR can be upgraded to Level 1 by attending the field sessions of a Level 1 (as opposed to having to take the entire Level 1 even if AFR was previously completed).

When did they change that? I haven't gotten any notices but then again I haven't really thought to look. I suppose I should make a call. THanks for the heads up!

The new AIM (Avalanche Instructor Manual) is now in draft # 6 and comments to the national folks are due by June 15, so the whole situation is kind of a moving target right now.

I'm going to be on St. Johns on that day this year so I won't make it. Last year was a great time, lots of midwest maggots were there. Course is very basic but its worth attending.

Maybe I will make it up for some skiing this winter Jay??? We will see. I still like the idea of a mini at Coffee Mill. We had a mini-mini last year at Chestnut and it was a lot of fun.

Had a great time last year meeting all of you. I won't make it this year, but you might want to post this out in the main board for those interested before the deadline. Might get a little more exposure that way.

MN Mags - get in contact with Jay ASAP on this. Sounds like the numbers are a little on the low side right now, so more people are needed so that it can happen.

I just saw this thread, but I wouldn't have been able to attend. It was a great time last night, and Jay and his family showed me some amazing hospitality.
