Ipod touch / i phone questions

I kinda want an Iphone, but there is no ATT service around Bozeman. Yes there are ways around that but I don't want some crappy local carrier if I potentially leave tha 59715 at the end of the summer.

One feature that I am interested in is the google maps ability. I know that the ipod touch can access the maps via wireless, but are the maps still accessable when there is no wireless.

    Would this situation work...
When I have a wireless signal, i access the map that I want, then I hop in the car where I have no signal and still follow that map to my destination. Once that map is accessed can I scroll, zoom etc etc so that it is actually usable?

On the iphone the maps work over the cell network when there isn't wireless. They won't pin point your location, but its close. There is a new iphone coming out in june, so it might be worth waiting...some say it will have gps, but who knows.

If you were relying on that map, I wouldn't suggest relying on the cached image of the map on the ipod touch... I'm not sure how you would save them on the ipod touch for later viewing, but that's what you would need to do. and if you wanted to zoom and pan and whatnot after you leave the wireless network, you would need those zoomed images saved as well. Too bad NASA Worldwind isn't mac/ipod touch compatible, it does a better job of caching the images in my experience.
but I know we can't all stay here forever, so I wanna write my words on the face of today...

do you have sprint in your area? if so, you could get the HTC Touch phone and have all the capabilities and more, i think, of an i-phone. they're mapping system is amazing, me and my buddies would've been lost when we travelled to colorado for a month without it. shows you every gas station, and their prices, fast-food, hotels etc. sick ass phone

Maps do not work especially wellon an iPod Touch without wifi, unless you specify your route while connected, and don't plan on changing it. Otherwise you get what was last loaded.

There ya go, Jumper's on it. Otherwise i'd suggest possibly a crackberry, which also has google maps, but not as cool as a display obviously.
