Unless you have any real need to make serious bank (tuition, rent, debt to pay off, etc...) Take the best paying bitch work you can find. You don't want a job that you can't be hung over at in the summer on a regular basis.

Somebody mentioned fencing. As in installing fence. I did that all through highschool for a ranch up here. The days were somewhat long, as in 6-5, but, the pay was really good, especially after a summer and you could go in as a crew leader. There really isn't much to it, you get all kinds of cool scars on your hands and arms, and tatter clothes, but it is usually a fairly low key kind of job. Get to cruise in a pick up or four wheeler most of the day, and when it comes time to attach wire, blare tunes out of the pick up. If you can find a place that will take you on, I would go that way. In a heartbeat. Now, I am off to my bitch job, aka, retail. Avoid this at all costs.

In high school I worked at a nursery and garden store as a general all-around bitch. The pay was just okay, but I look back on those days fondly- the guys I worked with were cool, we had a fair amount of goof-off time between taking care of responsibilities, and the job was physically active so I was in shape just from working.

Two years later I started testing games for a software company. It was a good job too, paid much better, and now software development is my career. If you have an idea for what you would be able to do as a "real" job, it's not too early to start heading in that direction. It's not the same thing as a committment, but you've got to try stuff to see if you like it.

You write well, I like your complete sentences and punctuation. Those will serve you well.
that's all i can think of, but i'm sure there's something else...

Work Construction. Seriously, I wish I had when I was your age. You will learn skills that will last you a lifetime. You will meet some characters, get in shape, get a tan, and participate in something that will be there in 20 years when you return to the neighborhood and can say "I built that". It will probably be hard work, but the pay will be decent and you will have some skills that will always be in demand.

I worked construction in high school. Outside work, fresh air, and a good workout. And you'll be buff when you go back to school. Construction is a 7-3 job most of the time, so you get off early. Do it.

You're in Evergreen right? I worked for parks and rec one summer and got baseball fields ready for games. At lunch every day (they would drop me off at the yellow barn where the official "office" was) I went mt biking in 3 sisters. I drove around in circles listening to music and dragging the field. It wasn't a bad job for a summer, I got to be outside, ride my bike, and learn why people go to college.

    Casa Bonita is always hiring.

Work your way up to cliff-diver, or at least assistant cliff-diver. Go to your interview in a gorilla suit.

    hey nick--
a lot of forest service districts hire 16 and 17 yr olds to work on their trails crews under the Youth Conservation Corps program. If you're interested in doing manual labor that is actually pretty freakin' fun, you should try giving the South Platte Ranger District a call and see if they are hiring.

when I was 17 I bussed tables at a place where we got cash tips. I think I earned 10 an hour in cash plus minimum wage, not bad. perhaps you could make some calls to restaurants and find out which ones tip their non-server employees?

This would be correct. Not only do you make good dough walking around a golf course, but you also meet people, that, if you're not a complete asswipe, could have excellent connections for you in the future, with the future being a few days later if you play it right.

sorry, i didnt read every post word for word--but waiter? crazy people work in restaurants, so its super fun, you can spit in the food of people you dont like and hello--hottie waitresses?? Pick a good restaurant, not a diner for them. Do you want to spend your summer working with a bunch of slacker guys like yourself, or do you want to make money and have some fun--

Waiting/bussing tables at the golf course sounds ideal- same money as anywhere else (although people might not tip there?), you can play the course sometimes, there will be girls, you get to be outside, Lacey Underall, etc.

I look at it this way: you're not going to get a great-paying job (unless you can get a job waiting tables at a nice restaurant, it sounds like you can't), so you might as well get one with sweet perks. Since you're a teenaged dude, you're probably goofy, smell bad, and can't buy alcohol. A job that puts you in proximity to booze and girls should be your #1 target.

Side thought: do your parents know anyone who runs a business and could give you a job?

Great idea, but not sure of too many clubs in the Denver area that still use caddies...Hiwan is looking for busboys, though...but that probably falls into your definition of "bitch" job...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet:

    LIFEGUARD!!!!!!!!

absolute best way to spend your summers, making good $$, getting a tan, seeing your friends, and sitting in the sun at the beach. we had a term for it "SOYA Summer" aka sit on your ass summer. Those were the days. I lifeguarded from 15 to my first summer internship in college. Plus, if you teach swim lessons, you make bank. Also, rain days, get paid to sit in your car and read a book.

when i moved to manhattan for a real job, I actually thought about becoming a lifeguard on one of those ritzy rooftop pools on the UES for fun, as I still have all of my certs, but decided to let the glory days go... plus, a low key beach in a laid back waterfront town beats dealing with aggro parents and UES brats

but yeah, awesome job... may be too late for you to get all the certs now, but perhaps consider it for the future?

And take the golf carts out after hours and wreck havoc! I remeber one time a co-worker, a nice little gay guy, (not that thre is anything wrong with that) and I were each out on one and he ran over a bees nest. He flew off his cart and ran around and around swatting and screaming. had to be there, but good times for sure!

It's been a few days, but I think I've covered a lot of stuff that's mentioned. Worked on a hay farm as a kid for $1.00 an hour, that's definately a bitch job. A lifeguard, making $75/week for 3 summers. Then a construction job for a summer as a gopher, up to $3.00 an hour. Then on a survey crew for the US Forest Circus on a 180 day appointment for the YCC. Then for Tennessee Wildlife under the YACC program. No big money gigs.

Kid that caddies at The Olde Farm here has caddied for a bunch of celebs, Dave Thomas, Peyton and Archie Manning, etc.

This was in Taos, working for el monte segrado. This would have been around 2004ish. I guess I was kind of surprised he was hired for it too, but he's really a champ, and has proven it by moving on to manage a jiffy lube at age 18-19 while building a rep as a volunteer firefighter. Now he has one of just 5 full time paid positions in the fire dept there at age 21, a job he'll probably retire from at age 41.

you too can do this shit nick, you just have to realize you're the shiznit and then go prove it.

I worked as an union laborer for the biggest earthmoving company in michigan EVERY summer throughout high school and college. While my friends were galavanting through Yurp and fucking their girlfriends, I'd work 14-16 hour days.

BUT, i made hella ton of cash for someone of that age, met some characters, and learned early on that I was one lucky sonnabitch that didn't have to do that shit for the rest of his life.
