Mags with web sites, let's network

Hello,
I know there's lots of us around that run websites related to what we love to do. I too have a number of websites and would be eager to exchange links or form other partnerships with mags who have related web sites.
If you have web sites related to
Lake Tahoe
weddings
weddings
skiing
mountain biking
hiking
rafting/paddling
photography or the wedding links above
golf
disc golf
travel
camping
beaches
fishing
weather
kids
sonoma - www.sonoma-weddings.com (about 2 weeks out).
napa
wine country
or many other web sites that are under my control. most of these are wedding based but there also some fishing, concierge, camping, and more.
then let's work something out. pm me or respond to this thread.

i can vouch for powdork - his site sends some decent, quality traffic!

I also would be up for some additional partnerships where applicable.

I'm looking to start a site. I live in a vacation/second home area do these sort of informational sites workout? Mostly I want a site to test some stuff out on. But I would like to add some relevant content and maybe sell ad space.
People should learn endurance; they should learn to endure the discomforts of heat and cold, hunger and thirst; they should learn to be patient when receiving abuse and scorn; for it is the practice of endurance that quenches the fire of worldly passions which is burning up their bodies.

depends on the level of competition. your site can become popular without becoming profitable too. For instance, I rank #1 for Lake Tahoe beaches and that brings tons of traffic. But if I had 1/10th that traffic from people searching for Lake tahoe hotels, i would be rich now.
thats why i need your help.

huck4bucks, i've added nesmith photography to the north tahoe wedding photographer's page

powdork - are you looking to receive traffic from related sites or is this part of an SEO link building strategy. If it is the former - great, if it's the latter, you should know that reciprocal link building is not the best strategy for increasing your link count and in turn rank for specific keywords at least when we're talking Google.

*edit to add - just an FYI - if you'd like more info just PM me

sphinx, contrary to current popular opinion, i will follow a reciprocal linking strategy (as well as others) specifically because of comments by Matt Cutts, et al recommending that we don't any more.
i will not participate in 3 way link deals involving a link from a quality site of mine where i get a link back from a site created exclusively for these programs. other than that, any link is appreciated

but this is not just about link exchanges. example; i just added a link to huck4bucks site from a content page knowing full well there is no link coming back from the photography site.
if anyone wants to link to my sites, i would greatly appreciate it. I will add links to the categories i listed in my first post. if you want me to link to your sites, post them up. i will link to them if i think they're related to my content regardless of whether you link back. if everyone here does the same, we all win.

Hey dork...good thread...I have a network of about 400 sites, The parent site is: http://teamsporttech.com - by clicking into the portfolio you can visit a few of our network sites.

We generate about 2 million uniques per month. Typically we only work with other sites in an official advertising partner capacity. That said...we typically have about 5,000,000 unsold page impressions per month and if you can think of a way to reciprocate that, I would be happy to put up an ad when inventory is available.

sphinx, I also agree with powdork to some extent...

there's entirely too much fear built around recip. link strategies - and also a ton of misconceptions too.

if it's your ONLY strategy, then no - I wouldn't recommend straight up recip. link building either.
Especially when you're only listing on a network of sites built for recip. link exchanges.

However, the prevailing school of thought amongst the most hard-core, experienced link builders is - if it makes sense for your business/website - do it anyway, regardless if it is a recip. link/ 'frowned' upon. Even Matt cutts does not argue that point.

so in a situation like powdork's where he is proposing likeminded sites/businesses link because they have similar themes in common and strategic reasons (traffic being one), it is more likely to be considered a natural business relationship or social vote of confidence.

Another thing to consider is the fact that these links need not be straight up homepage links to each other's domain. Link to deeper points in your sites, targeting very specific products/services/topics. This also gives you better opportunities with anchor text/ to rank for those terms.

another tip: don't have the links to each other's sites turn up on the same day. spread it out a couple weeks even.

tywebb,
sorry i can't see any there that will work for me in that fashion. can't see how I can help you out either unless there are some ski clubs in there somewhere.

edg,
not really for seo. i would guess these links get the nofollow treatment, but haven't really checked. i just want people to link directly to those pages, and have an idea of what pages i'm talking about.

rideit,
i'm sure there are some. most of the ones i come across are bs. the images are never sized correctly and they have no chance of ever ranking well. they are a good source of web design business though.

more ideas for networking (and a bump).

doesn't have to be linking. bookmarking is also important.
we should add each other's site to our bookmarks, especially deli.icio.us and digg and the like.

huck4bucks, i too use 1&1, but am in the middle of a very bad experience. clients cc expired and their email warnings went into her junk mail. site was locked and sent to NCO for collections. She paid on the 4/26, and their policy is that it would be unlocked in 3-4 business days (evidently, they're unaware the internet is open for business everyday). it's still not up and after several hours between NCO and 1&1 on the phone both by me and my client, the best they can do is say to call back Friday if it's not up. Definitely a good reason to have your registrar and hosts be separate entities.

just read the USA today article about Tripadvisor and Tahoe. I am assuming that's what the pdf TripAdvisor recently sent me said, but I couldn't open it. Don't know why anyone would use acrobat for anything like that. You might as well just assume 40% won't be able, or won't want to open it because it's such a shitty computer killing program.

Is your twitter logo supposed to sit on top of the Zonder logo? (the vacation rental link)

Hey Powdork,
Thanks for the link...I'll have more content up as I get more time to dev these things. Any interest in developing/revenue sharing on any of those? It's too much work right now for me to get these all up. Typically I keep them for clients to create minisites and get some backlinks.

As for 1and1, I've heard tons of horror stories, but my run-ins with them have been limited. I did have a problem about a month ago where they lost our entire DB (used for running our CMS program) so we lost the whole site. They informed us that they didn't do DB backups and that was up to us. Took us a few days to get everything running again. I get your point of not having all my eggs in one basket, though. Maybe I'll move all these domains over.
