There goes six weeks

The bad: Broken hand that will almost definitely require surgery, I'll find out on wednesday.

The good: Amazing day at Snowshoe. Prescrption for Percocet.

Went to snowshoe for the opening weekend of their DH season. Yesterday turned out to be a perfect, sunny day. It was a bit muddy early on, but the sun dried things out nicely, making for a perfect day. Anyway, we rode most of the new freeride trails, then went over to ride the DH stuff. The old pro course has a fun series of drops that I've done quite a few times. The second drop requires you to ride up onto a rock, make a 90 degree turn, and drop about 4 feet to a steepish downhill. I fudged the approach on my first try, so I impatiently ran back up to try again, but I had to wait for my friend to hit it. He hit the turn, hesitated, causing him to pull up too hard and bust his ass upon landing. He hurt himself, but it didn't look too serious, so I sat and waited anxiously for him to gather himself and move his bike. I really wanted to hit it while I still had mental momentum going, but I think I must have rushed it because I ended up going off the drop sideways, causing me to get tossed off and slide across the rocks on the side of the trail. I managed to split my knee open through my knee guard, and I snagged my hand on something, breaking it.

I'm mostly pissed because despite succesfully doing this drop many times, it's also caused me the most wrecks. During the NORBA race last year, I watched hundreds of guys hit it and saw very few of them wreck. So, it frustrates the hell out of me that it did me in. Needless to say, that trail will be my first destination when I'm able to ride again.

I have a couple spots on my two favorite trails that definitely have my number. One of them is within my ability, but mentally I just can't get myself to do it. The other I insist on doing over and over again, but it has left me pretty banged up, including a dislocated finger in september of last year that i reduced myself on the trail and then rode out. sucker still hasn't really healed.

This definately proves that you definately suck and shouldn't ride bikes j/k

The worst feeling is crashing on something that you've done a hundered times, and then you get nervous the first few times you hit it again, causing either more crashes or poor style. Then the anger at yourself kicks in, causing more crashing. Then you finally style it, remember that it's easy, and laugh about being timid/mad. Happens to me all the time.

I sure "reducing yourself" on the trail has some maggots figuring you're pretty kinky.

Had surgery this afternoon, just getting my brain functionality back. As soon as I woke up at the hospital, I was given 4 doses of Morphine, followed by a large dose of Lortab, yet my hand still hurt like hell. The pain has subsided some, helped by the 2 Lortabs I just took, but I'm pretty sore. The good thing is my cast has been replaced by an Ace bandage, so I have some use of my hand. Looks like I'll be able to have some functionaliy w/ in the next couple weeks, and hopefully will be able to do some light ridin in 5 weeks or so. However, right now a warm bed is the only thing that's really appealing to me.

I feel your pain, really. I see the specialist tomorrow due to breaking my big toe on Monday practicing for the DH race this weekend at Bountiful. I had broken it sometime this winter and just never got around to seeing the doctor and then Monday I REALLY nailed it. The first doctor was talking about putting in a pin; I hope this is not the case. In any case, I'm holding off any surgery until next week so I can race Sunday.

I've been away . . . . sorry you've join the ranks of the injured. I've broken quite a few bones, but nothing has hurt as bad as my hand/wrist after my surgery. I really feel your pain. I hate Lortab, other than pain relief, I don't see the attraction.

After seeing my dominatrix - physical therapist - I've seen a tremendous improvement in my mobility and feel. I really hope you're only five weeks away from riding again - I have been told repeatedly that it will be six months.

IG, glad you're healing up. I only broke the 3rd metacarpal, but had to get surgery because it's an oblique fracture and won't set correctly. I've been told 5-6 weeks by a couple ortho docs, so I'm hopeful that it won't take much longer than that. Only time will tell though.
