Talking Moving-related stoke and a question for the Utards

So, Thursday at work I finally heard the words I'd been waiting over two months for... "We've approved your request for a transfer to the SLC office"! Its hard for me to express just how pumped I am about this.

I'd been thinking about quitting work and moving out to UT since last November, and when my girlfriend decided to attend Duke in the fall for the next 18 months, I figured this was my chance - I could leave the EC, not feel like I was abandoning our relationship, ski some big mountains for awhile, and save a little cash. Found out too that a good buddy of mine just deferred his acceptance to Wharton and is heading out to SLC as well.

So now I'm trying to figure out housing. I'm thinking that I want to live somewhere about 25 minutes from downtown SLC and LCC (maybe the cottonwood heights area?). Price isn't too much of a problem, as I'll be keeping my Boston salary - but I'm shooting for something in the 600-800 range for a 2 bedroom place. Can any of you Utards recommend any non-crackhouseish places that fit the description above? Or just general tips on where I should be looking (I've visited a few times, so I'm somewhat familiar with the area)? Good tips will be rewarded with cheap EC beer when I move

I think we need more people in the Snowbasin crew, so you should move to layton, 25 min. to the hill and 25 to downtown SLC. Prolly would get more for your rent money also.

if you're looking for an apartment, pinnacle highland on bengal blvd is pretty nice, i've been here for about a year now. on average 20 minutes to the U of U and 20 minutes(11 miles) to the Bird. 3rd floor starts at 825 for a two bed, price drops as you go down.

I'm at the springs of country woods . It is a little cheaper than Pinnacle Highland. Rent for a 2 bedroom is around 715 or so. It is off of Fort Union which is the road that goes into BCC and is about a 18-30 minute drive to Alta obviously that is conditions dependent. If you have any questions about this place PM me.

first things first you otta do a search on this I'm sure we have re hashed more than once.

    but a little of advice;

The housing market is seriously down and houses are not selling around here. if you have the means, this is the time to buy. you can get into a decent house in great locaton for under 180k

think about it , because the interest rates are supposta go up soon.

    good luck

Thanks guys for the responses. I ran a search, but my boolean prowess is weak, so I got no useful hits.

Flykdog - that is a tasty looking line. Didn't you guys ski that in zero visibility at the mini? I may have to bring a large supply of depends when i move.

Years of paying high rents in beantown and shelling out cash for ski trips all winter has left me with virtually no savings, so a house is out of the question for now, but thanks for the tips on the market - I may end up going month 2 month rather than a lease, and pounce on some cheap property once when i have enough for a down payment.

I've been told if you throw a stick in any one direction, you can easily find a place or five with rent in the range you're looking for.

Welcome to Utah. Seeya in the winter.

Stump, this is what you need:

Variety is the spice of life. And the skiers and boarders who take that to heart have Ski Utah Passes. We have a limited number of these passes available, so act fast to get this great deal. The Silver and Gold passes will work at every resort in Utah. That means that you can ski anywhere in the state, over and over and over again. Ahhhhh, life in Utah is good.

    Ski Utah Silver Pass
30 days at every ski resort in Utah

    Non Transferable

    $1800

    Ski Utah Gold Pass
40 days at every ski resort in Utah

    Transferable

    $2500

    Stump,

You can just show up, stay in a hotel and be in a rental within a week. That's what we did.

What are you looking for? Apartment complex, house? If you want to be close to any type of "life" I'd suggest Sugarhouse, The Avenues, or Downtown.

In Sugarhouse where we live we're 35 minutes from Snowbird and 5 to downtown. You can get 2 bedrooms within your price range here, but will get more for your money down in Sandy.

Sandy/Cottonwood Heights you're gonna be closer to skiing -- 15-20 minutes -- but in suburbia.

J, thanks for the beta. I don't have a preference really - apartment complex is fine. They have their benefits - pool and gym, etc... House would be fine too - no neighbors to piss off with loud movies or music. I'm pretty indifferent. Being close to "life" would be a bonus, but its not a prerequisite. I've had my fair share of "life" out east: my ever increasing girth is proof of that. To be honest, I think my dream location would be somewhere about halfway between the office and skiing, so that I can make morning ski forays, stop at home to shower, and continue on to work with minimal driving distance.

Sugarhouse seems like it'd be pretty good for that, no? (unless I messed up my map reading).

CantDog- that pass would be sick.

Yup, if your office is downtown. Not many apartment complexes here, mainly old bungalo-style houses.

By "life" I mean non-strip-mall livin', be it bars, restauraunts, or just an uplifting environment.

So...what kinda work do you do?

you might want to check out anything between fort union and 9400 which is basically cottonwood. just from driving around i've seen a lot of for rent signs randomly around neighborhoods. def. close to the skiing.

I pulled into town on Nov 6, 00 (election day) and signed a lease at Pinnacle Highlands on the 8th. Many, many options right now and you can't go wrong. When we bought our house, we went for the closest place to Alta that we could afford and have no regrets at all (Sandy, across the street fro Alta View Hospital, after ski/bike emergency room visits are really easy). I can be in the Wildcat parking lot in 15 minutes and OFTEN skip out of work for a few turns (hours). I'm biased but if you want to be close to Everything, look from Ft Union to Sandy. Good luck and we'll see you when you get here. (prepare yourself for never going East of Denver again, unless you are flying to Europe)

Thanks for the suggestions, peeps. Anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes up to Wildcat sounds pretty solid. How is the non-ski related bus system out in the Fort Union/Sandy area? I know the trax system runs downtown from Sandy, but are the busses a reasonable way of getting downtown?

trax is pretty sweet from sandy and goes right downtown. I presonally agree with those that think that the cottonwood heights / 9400 south area is the best I'd much rather be closer to skiing that the poor excuse for a night life that's known as downtown SLC.

Miggedy MacDaddy - whats up with that link? When I hit it I get the recent thread about first forum impressions. Is it supposed to go to something about apartments? If so, I'd like to see it

I don't want to shamelessly promote myself but as a Realtor I can second the above statement. There are a ton of programs out there that do not require a down payment. Better to purchase and rent to other maggots. But if this does not work for your situation I know of many nice rentals in the Fort Union area (7200 S.) very close to I-15 and the 215. Which would put you very close to both LCC and BCC and not terribly far away from my stomping grounds at snowbasin either. Pm me if you have any questions. One thing is certain you will not regret your move here!! Good Luck.

    Hunterski,

can I pm or e you with some basic house buying jong questions??

    Stumper,

to help you out - sounds like your office is downtown is it no? besides what has been mentioned you might also look at duplexes in the millcreek or foothill area - these would be easy for a.m. sessions at Alta and a quick stop to shower at home before heading to the office.

If you only want to live 25 min from SLC move to Park City. It has everything SLC has with more cultured residents.

Wow, and I was stoked to find a 2 bed/1 bath 1100 sq foot apartment for only $1400/month in a decent neighborhood in LA. Once again, you Utards suck. Cheap rent, deep powder, short commutes to the resorts, next you're going to tell me that rush hour doesn't last all day.

On a Boston salary living here in Utah = debt paid soon, house to follow, ski pass wherever you want.

You are sitting prettier than you think.
