I'd bump up to Savage model 10/110 instead of the Axis. Much more aftermarket support and a nicer action out of the box. I have one in .300 win mag.

On a different note... one of my employees brought out a .500 S&W X-Frame on our last company range day. He had some "Light" 385gr loads and some heavy 700gr loads. Needless to say the 700gr had some serious recoil:

After paying my county taxes I stopped by the local bang stick store to window shop. Spied a new S&W wheel gun that will shoot .410, 45 LC and .45acp. Its called the Governor and $800 but I really like it plus I have not had a wheel gun for years.

How does 45 acp and .410 work in the same barrel? Granted,I dont know fuck all about pistol cartridges, and have zero experience with sidearms, just curious. Good looking gun,by the way!

Casing size is close enough to use the same cylinder size and because it's a revolver, the length isn't an issue. Same reason .357s can shoot .38s. You can also by snake shot in .38 casing so you can get a "shotgun" like spread from either a .38 or .357 but not a lot of load options.

On Snapt's question, either would work but the .270 would be a more do it all if you wanted to hunt larger game. I have a Tikka T3 .243 that you could shoot if you're ever out Boise way.

Same size bore, actually. Honestly from my experience, the .410 shotshells work marginally at best, at least with birdshot. Slugs work okay but at that point you should just run .45lc rounds.

scottyb, do your own research but if you have't bought it yet I'd steer you away from "the 'guvana" and instead toward a nice .44 mag Smith and Wesson N-frame or a Ruger Redhawk.

Wouldn't the shot tend to fuck up the rifling?

I won a Taurus judge a couple of years ago in a raffle. Similar idea - shoots 45LC and .410, but I've never even taken it out of the box.

LW: I'll have to see about getting one of those sweet holsters for the 1006. Picking up the 1006 and 1076 from a guy I found in VT who does amazing work on 3rd gen Smith's and 1911's (Karl Sokol @ Chestnut Mountain Sports). Dropped them both off with him for some TLC back in Jan, and I'm picking them up tomorrow afternoon. I'm excited to see how they shoot - should be sweet as Sokol has a great reputation for being one of the best gunsmiths doing custom work on the S&W's. Been carrying the DW Razorback an awful lot these days and it's much more comfortable to carry. Not sure if I'm going to carry either of the S&W's again - they're just so damn heavy.....

Interesting question. I can't imagine lead shot would do much damage, but a lot of steel shot could start eating away at the rifling.

It's a beast! Any chance of carrying it? I need to look at one of those. Multipurpose is always fun.

Sounds sweet. 3" shotgun, then! Didn't realize the 410 was a shot cartridge, but definitely makes sense. What's it for? General self defence up really close?

Bird hunting in small bore shotguns. My buddy shoots one upland hunting--just makes it very challenging and also more friendly for small folks shooting scatter guns.

If you read the reviews on it S&W did it better. They would not gamble it unless they saw the market for this kind of pistol.

Problem is with birdshot loads, is that it has rifling in a very short barrel and when you shot it the pattern spreads so quickly beyond 6' and beyond that it's not much use. But for pest control up close (ie snakes) they work good, plus there are some cool self defense loads now for both it and the judge that take advantage of the very long cylinder. Personally would still rather have a .44mag N-frame.

.410 is a very popular cartridge for shooting grouse and ptarmigan. Also a good first shotgun for youth.

Another advantage to the Judge/Governor is being able to load both a bird shot and bullet into the same gun. I know folks around here who carry them loaded for both snakes and predators. They're actually pretty popular amongst farmers and ranchers.

The thunder 5 was the first wildly/okay somewhat available 410 pistol.

    I hate caliber conversations...

Neat idea but your range is terrible to the point of it being useless with 410 unless something is ON you. At which point you would most likely be better off with some other caliber.

IF they let you do a 12 gauge revolver without gov stamps, I would love to try it with slugs.

"In patterning tests, the 000 buckshot delivered a nice tight group of approximately 2.25" from a distance of 7 yards. The 4 buck, on the other hand, spread out to almost 15", meaning that only five of the nine pellets actually landed on the target! Three others were clearly misses, and I never did find where the ninth pellet went -- but only five landed on the target."

CDNN has 75rd AK drums, wind up kind, on sale for $54 and the 50rd Glock 9mm drums for $40. Both are the Korean made which are good quality in my experience and function well..
