Finally got my new T/C Encore 7mm08 back together the way I want it this morning. Here's a shitty photo!:
Mods: got the trigger down to about 3lbs, threw some laminated High Plains wood on, forearm free floated and pillar bedded. Yeah - that's right. I pillar bedded a handgun.
Should have glass bedded the action. That must be fun to shoot.
Even .50 toting jesus would complain about the recoil on that beast Jer. Nice though. What scope is it? Been wanting a scope for my s/w 22 revolver for a while.
So I have a heads up for the mags, and a question. These authentic sig 552's are availiable for purchase, former LEO guns that are semi auto and being sold legally.

While 4k is a lot of coin, and I already have a sig 556, I have been thinking of purchasing one of these purely as an investment to be sold at a later date. Given how rare these are and the fact that few if any new guns will hit the market within my lifetime, is 4k a bargain? Enough of a bargain to justify buying one based solely on the desire to make money off of it?
Affording one of these would be possible although not easy for me right now. Really only interested in it as an investment.
What do you guys think? TNKen, I know youve owned some pricy guns, do you ever make money off of them?

Actually the recoil is not bad at all. I load reduced loads (120gr bullet at about 2350fps). I shot 50 rounds at IHMSA steel today with no problems. Cool thing is when I first got it it had rubber grips and I could not get it to shoot well at all. Since I lightened the trigger and changed the grip/forend I cannot miss. I knocked down everything I aimed at today. It was wierd. The wood forend rests better against your leg in Creedmore and I've always preferred wood grips on monster pistols - it allows your hand to slip slightly during recoil which reduces the percieved recoil. At least that's my theory. I used to have Hogue rubber grips on my Dan .44 mag as well and switched back to wood after about three sessions. Having the weapon slip slightly after the shot isn't the best for quick follow-ups, but both guns are set up for IHMSA and the T/C is a single shot anyway so I'm not all that concerned with regaining the target quickly.
And really - a .50 with a decent break like the Barrett isn't all that bad. The only gun I've ever owned that kicked my ass is my K-31. I still wear one of those faggot strap-on recoil bras in the spring when I haven't shot for awhile.
As far as the other thing - guns are usually a pretty good investment but I don't think I could ever buy a gun and not shoot it a lot.
Oh yeah - scope is a Bushnell 2x-6x. Elevation adjustment is lame, but 7mm08 shoots so flat that it doesn't matter under 300 yards.
That big ass fake can ruins it. If you sbr it and take that off it would he cool. Still, 4k would buy a lot of other cool guns.
Thoughts. Doubtful that you can buy a gun at full retail, and instantly flip it. When I buy MG's or other firearms to flip, I always try to get in at about 60% of retail. If you are really in love with the gun, be prepared to buy it at full retail. Don't plan on selling it. Realize that there are very few guns manufactured today that you can instantly flip and profit. And if you don't know the market well, be prepared to get hosed by some unscrupulous dealer. Antique guns are even worse. I know MG's and handguns, don't ask me about western 1800 colts and smiths, or about Civil war guns.
If you are wanting to start a collection, $4k will put some nice pieces in the safe. My suggestion is don't invest all the eggs in one basket. Remember if you buy a high dollar piece, you limit the number of potential purchasers out there. Lots of folks will pony up $500 for a nice pistol, but few are willing to sink $5k in to a rifle.
Don't know much about the 522 advertised. Sounds a little pricey to me. For that kind of jack, you can buy 3 or 4 nice pieces, with mags and ammo to play.
I have had several five figure guns and a couple of six figure ones. Moved many of them. The MG-42 I had was fun, but I realized if I had an out of battery detonation, I had ruined and totally devalued a very, very valuable gun.

Many people over the years have given me the same advice; and when it comes from such a diverse crowd, with such direction, I tend to heed their warnings:
1) Never buy a gun to make a profit; and it's corollary:
2) Never sell a firearm you own.
I've followed that, and my guns and I have been very happy. And I'm happy with them. So it works.
Yea, I have a collection of guns I shoot already, really dont need any more. This would just be to make money.
I had a mini 14 i bought for $350, put $100 worth of parts onto and sold for $750, I was pleased with that.
I also should have bought a saiga 12 or 4 back when they were going for $250.
I should also buy a k31 or 4 now because I bet they will be pricy eventually, just like Sprinfields used to be cheap.
The goal wouldnt be to flip it for a profit immeidiatly, but rather wait a year or two and see if their rarity has someone willing to pay a bit more, like 6 or 7k for one. I've thought about spending anohter grand on a longer barrel and gas system to get rid of the fake can, and make it legal to sell without sbr'ing it, possibly getting around 8k I think.
Problem is with rare guns is the price is basically as high as some guy with too much money to burn is willing to pay, but its hard to find an actual market value cus so few of them are up for sale.
I'll probably sit around thinking about it till they sell out.

I really dont know much about this; take what I say with ababur ton of salt. I don't see anyone paying more then $5k for something with a fake can attached to it. Your chances would improve without the can, or even better, a real one! When the republicans fail to pull their heads out of their asses and Obama gets elected again, anything that is already NFA controlled will see a temporary spike in price.
Many gun owners are a bunch of paranoid, flavor of the month, irrational impulse buyers (see magazine sales at already high price). Just call up one of your democratic congressmen and have them introduce a bill that would make this more restricted. That will spike the price! Ok, I am done making fun.
Actually very good advice. It's a gamble, but if you buy $4000 worth of 30rnd AK mags right now and Obama gets re-elected in 2012 you'll probably be able to sell them for at least $10,000. $6000 in less than two years is a good investment. OTOH, I'm sure The Government will then confiscate the whole $10,000, so you'll actually end up losing $4000. This will matter very little compared to being interred in a re-education camp.
Blew through the remainder of my 168gr .308 loads today (switched to 175gr a few months back) and...
....everything was super peachy!

What gun are you using for the 308?
Last edited by XavierD; 05-26-2011 at 09:44 PM.
Basically a DPMS .308 I built up for mid range (out to 600 yards). Shot it again today and it shot perfectly - just like yesterday.
..and I was just joking with that crack about the re-education camps. The government is there to serve us. Long live The Government!
Brother is looking for a 9mm for plinking, also wants a .22 conversion kit to fofill his new addiction of going to the range and blowing threw tons of rounds. He has been eyeing the CZ85b and the EAA witness and wants to keep it in the 5-600 ballpark. Any suggestions or input from our gun nuts?
If he likes the 1911 platform, look at a Kimber or Springfield. Both have .22 conversions available. Another good option is Sig Sauer 226, which he can pick up used at a reasonable price.

Three Questions for you all.
First question for those with civilian AR knowledge:
I have been wanting to get an m4 of my own for a while now. I am currently saving up for a pistol but came across what looks to be a really good deal on an AR; please correct me if I am wrong.
It's an 14.5 in LMT defender w/ battlecomp 1.5 perm attached. It has magpul moe everything: stock, hand guard, grip, gangster grip, back up sights... He wants $850 for it. It has been painted and has ~3000rds through it.
I would probably end up changing the stock, rear sight and hand guard (another ~$600) down the road, but will get me shooting for now.
All the LMT products I have seen have been top notch, but being painted worries me as I have seen what can happen when an idiot paints an m4.
Getting this would mean I would have to hold off on getting a hand gun for a bit.
So is this a good deal or do I have no idea what I am talking about?
Second Question:
Are there any good 40cal options other then the glock 23 that have a 22 conversion?
Third Question: Anyone know how far 9mm ranger SXT penetrates in drywall? Will it go through a wall an still be lethal? I know 9mm FMJ can go through two walls and a person, in any order. I am happy with the terminal ballistics of 147gr SXT in living tissue, but living in an APT I am worried that a round could go through a wall or two.
Does gangster grip = VFG? Is it a gas system or piston? Are hand guards plastic or quad rails? Painted is probably not a problem, lots of guys paint their ARs.
New LMT Defender runs about $1,400 over on gunbroker.com Big question I have is it a built gun or a factory unit. Sounds like an LMT receiver that someone built up. Paint would be somewhat telling as well.
3,000 rounds isn't a lot, but enough to put wear on the gun. Will he let you check the internals for wear.
Not a steal, but a decent price even for a used, built, painted AR.
I think Sig Saur makes a .22 kit for their .40, as well as Springfield and Kimber for the .40 cal. 1911's.
On the ammo thing, it would probably penetrate two 1/2 inch drywall boards. 3/4 inch makes a difference, and if it hits a stud squarely, probably will not pass through. Lethal? Depends on if a piece hits my finger vs clips the dorsal aorta.

Thanks for the answers.
I bet he built it up, sounds like he bought the upper and lower from LMT, and the magpul stuff to save some cash. As far as being a built/factory gun, LMT sells upper receiver groups with the barrel already attached (I can not find one otherwise), which should reduce the risk of it being all fucked up. If both the upper and the receiver are from the same brand there should not be any mating issues right?
I will check the internals for sure if I decide to check it out. (and yes gangster grip = VFG)
Another noob AR question, are there any good midlength 14.5/16in 9/1 or 8/1 twist barrels for 5.56? It seems everyone is only making 7/1 twist now, which does not make sense unless you are only shooting heavier rounds like MK262 or longer M856, but the cheaper M855 and M193 are both better out of a 9/1.
So the 9mm SXT will not fully expand in drywall? Sounds like I should buy some dry wall, and go shoot through it at different angles.
Daniel and DPMS make 1 in 9 twists. JP makes 1 in 8 and possibly 1 in 9 (if you like spending money).
Not seeing the gun, I'd say that LMT sounds pretty fair. I wouldn't drop everything to buy it, but if the guts are ok $850 is a pretty good price. Are you just worried about getting the paint off? Zinnzer has this citrus stuff that you brush on and let sit for 20 hours or so - paint (Krylon at least) falls right off.
Anybody interested in a Nikon 2x handgun scope in excellent condition? I have pics (actually, there's a few pics of it in this thread on my Dan Wesson .44 mag).
After using a 2-6x (usually set at 4x) on my Encore, I figured it would be easier to hit the rams if I could see the rams. Scope is great - I just want more magnification for 200yds.
Got it for $180 - will sell for half that.
I posted a pic on the wrong place. Look at the I hate zombies thread, maybe someone knows how to move it here.
