Of course, for this kind of money, you could buy at Ruger 10/22 at Bass Pro, or probably a Mossburg shotty.

OR, a bunch of 9mm ammo so you can get proficient with the 226.
Will shooting the 226 make me more proficient with a long gun? If so, this might be the answer.

Not likely to get a conversion kit, as they're nearly as expensive as getting say a Sig Mosquito or a Walther P22.

I'm pretty confident with the 226, but its not exactly something I can go hunting with, which is why I was interested in long guns.

    AR feeding problem

Took my AR to the range the other night and after about 100 rds (I wasn't firing for effect, just one shot at a time trying to dial in my groups with iron sights) and twice had issues where it was trying to feed two rounds at once.

So I have two rounds stuck in the upper. Removing the magazine was difficult and I had to use a wooden dowel to push the bolt assembly back to clear the jam, but that wouldn't do in a zombie apocalypse situation.

Is it my mags? I use Brownell's green tops. I keep the rifle clean and use good brass. Any thoughts?

I should have just pm'd Jer and TNKen, but wanted everyone to know what a badass I am cuz I gots an evil black rifle.

Are those metal mags? Do you have more than one mag?

Depends on the stovepipe. Was it an empty and a loaded round? If so, your ejector is bad. Typically, if they die, the empty case goes up into the slot in the bolt handle. Aggravating. Take the bolt apart and clean it, inspect for broken metal. If it keeps up, there is a product called a Defender Ring that will help.

If two live rounds, your mags are the culprit. Get a Colt or standard GI mag and see if it helps. Change mags and ammo before you start overhauling the rifle.

On the .22 questions, before I bought a Mosquito or a Walther, I would get a Ruger Mark III. Both the Mosquto and Walther are hit and miss. Some run, some don't, and no apparent reason why.

It was two live rounds, with the bottom one having its bullet pushed back into the case.
I put an x on the mag with my sharpie so I know which one is the culprit. Hoping that's the case, thanks!

That's weird. I can't even picture how that could physically happen.

Bad mag, lips stretched... :-) both rounds riding too high in the mag and get picked up by the bolt.

Yep, it was the mags. I bought a few magpul pmags and went through a few hundred rounds and they work great. Then put in one of my older brownells and it tried to feed two rounds right away.

Another question... is it okay to run my AR with only 2 gas rings on the bolt? I seem to break one every 500 rounds or so.

Probably, but check the area where the recoil tube screws into the upper receiver to make sure the bolt isn't banging on the receiver. Excess pressure from the added ring may send it back too far. Doubtful, but might want to check.

I ordered a new gas ring that's one unit, rather than three separate rings. But wondering if using a white lithium grease might work better for the bolt rather than gun oil because of the high heat. Good idea? When I go shooting, I'll go through several hundred rounds in the AR and thinking I need something better to stand up to the gas heat on the rings and bolt.

The military uses CLP, I'd imagine a full auto rip through a few mags will put WAY more heat than you will ever see.

On my MG's, I mix up a 50/50 mixture of Slick 50 and Castrol 30 wt synthetic oil.

Other than that, I run either CLP or RemOil.

Bolt assembly and carrier, with a light application of the mixture. On the beltfed MG's, they got a liberal coating.

Rest of the gun gets RemOil after cleaning.

Big issue on AR's. Realize there is a lot of blowback through the rear of the receiver around the charging handle. Make sure you always wear eye protection, especially if you are using a suppressor.

My story is shooting the M-16 w/ .22 kit and a suppressor. It got nasty, as usual, and I took Gun Scrubber, jerked it apart, sprayed it down, shot on some RemOil and reassembled. First burst filled my right eye with GS and RO. Saturated my contact lens, and f-ed up my eye royally. About 6 weeks later, I got to put my contacts back in.

I always put on eyes when shooting and always when cleaning... after getting an eyeful of solvent spattered from the bristles on the brush I was using. I'd rather be maced.

Check out Mil-tec. It handles heat very well. You are actually supposed to heat up the part to operating temperature before applying it. You can do this with a hair dryer, or shooting. I have had good luck with using it on everything from m9s to 240s.

Filled out paper on a TC Encore pistol in 7mm-08 today. Picking it up Monday. Still gotta scope it, load rounds, zero and get come-ups for 100, 150 and 200 yards by next Saturday, which is the first match of the season. Shot a mock half-match with the
Dan .44mag the other day (haven't shot since last October) and got a 17. Hit every turkey.

see if you can find a stoeger 2000...probably the best you're going to do that fits your criteria, unless you can find a good condition A5 or 1100

Semi-autos are more fun at the range but I think a double action revolver is a better home-defense option, especially if you are not super well practiced (get a dud, pull the trigger again...no stovepipe, no rerack, if you're too freaked out to cock the hammer, pull the trigger until the bad guy stops)
Got a 686 a while back and really like it. Had a P89 9mm for awhile and definitely like the 686 more. .38 isn't much more than 9mm in terms of cost so shooting isn't terrible. Being able to run a burley round and a cheaper round through the same sidearm is nice.

Anybody here own/owned/had experience with a Savage 12 BVSS?

Wanna get one in 22-250 to replace the re-barreled Tikka which is now .260.

Heads up for steel shooters or anybody who wants to get into shooting steel: Bobcat Steel makes a large variety of shapes in AR500 (very hard steel - will last forever) at prices that are as cheap or cheaper than anybody else (especially their IPSC torsos). This is the only place I've found that makes 4" gongs.

Also - after waiting 2 months for LEO sign-off on my form 4, I've decided to go the Trust route - found a lawyer who is a shooter and is on a crusade about this type of thing. Unbelieveable what a hassle it can be to buy a muffler.

Yeah, the trust route is a good thing. Fortunately, Tennessee is a "shall sign" state. Sheriff has 15 days to sign or provide a basis for rejection.

    What can?

Went shooting with a daughter and her bf this weekend. He is a big hunter, but never was into black rifles and MG's. Stopped by the produce market and got a bunch of cabbage heads, which were lots of fun with the .223. I was shooting the STI 2011 and hitting cabbage heads at 100 yards about one out of every 3 or 4 shots.

Dragged out the M-16, Mac 11, and S&W 76 which are always fun. Brought the Thompson, but turns out I had put the Blish Lock in wrong and it wouldn't drop the firing pin. Two hours later at the house, figured it out. Good reason to go back!!
