I don't know for sure, but I suspect that those short side by sides have a choke like "Skeet" ? real wide pattern, are very light and easy to get on a moving small bird less than 10 yards from you.
I used to shoot allot of trap. - broke thousands of clay pigeons, Have a nice over under designed to do just that.
Also have used a Pump. and tried Semi auto. A pump or Semi auto with 6 rounds is kinda heavy to swing into action - but you get used to it.
An over under is purpose built for a task and is exactly the same every time you shoulder it and aim.
Same gun used for trap used for pheasant and duck, with a different load.

Back when I was around bird hunting tube loaded shot guns had a plug in them to restrict you to three rounds.
I assume that is still the law? You can't take out your 870 with 8 shells stacked in and blase away?

Yes, 2 in the tube one in the chamber. Just my opinion on the auto. I have zero issues shooting quail in tight.
I also shot trap,skeet, sporting clays. Don’t shoot trap anymore, to boring. Still shoot the others though. I have an auto 12 for waterfowl.

Last night I just searched Youtube for Quail hunting, and seems the standard is a short side by side. - go figure.

My s x s is IC and M. But, if you look at the persistent popularity of spreader loads, a lot of people are looking to effectively pattern as wide and early as possible.

If you are talking bobwhite quail and wagons, gaited horses or similar, I think part of the s x s allure will be just the old-school aspect, but they are nice for that kind of shooting.

Like the autos myself, and still have a sweet spot for Wingmaster pumps. I shoot mainly sporting clays and some skeet, but do find that trap helps with some western flushes, especially if your dog is broke so you can shoot low-er birds flying away from you.

$100 for handguns, and $200 for "assault weapons." Seems like all those guns probably were functional though, and not POSs that were getting handed in by people looking to game the system.
