I don't know for sure, but I suspect that those short side by sides have a choke like "Skeet" ? real wide pattern, are very light and easy to get on a moving small bird less than 10 yards from you.
I used to shoot allot of trap. - broke thousands of clay pigeons, Have a nice over under designed to do just that.
Also have used a Pump. and tried Semi auto. A pump or Semi auto with 6 rounds is kinda heavy to swing into action - but you get used to it.
An over under is purpose built for a task and is exactly the same every time you shoulder it and aim.
Same gun used for trap used for pheasant and duck, with a different load.
Back when I was around bird hunting tube loaded shot guns had a plug in them to restrict you to three rounds.
I assume that is still the law? You can't take out your 870 with 8 shells stacked in and blase away?
