Exactly. It was painfully obvious how much effort I was making to tell them 1cm back. The only thing I could have done more was stand over the tech to make sure of the mounting. And people here would still be telling me it was my fault because I didn't drill the holes myself.

I think this thread is just an excuse for people to say "well it's your own fault for taking them to REI. My local shop would never..." - then they come on here and bitch when said local shop goes ahead and botches a mount anyway.

I thought with all of those confirmation steps things would be fine, so I didn't ask for a Sharpie.

I can only go by the information you have given. I'm sorry you took that to mean "you idiot, he can't read your mind"

I think by the way you worded it in your first post, I had a pretty legitimate explanation.

Either way, sack up and learn to mount your own.

Other small places seem to be more like "Oops. We'll just remount that for ya, no problem. What? New skis? STFU, you're lucky we even talk to you" and the maggot has to go through all sorts of runaround, gather evidence, and threaten court to even get them to talk replacement.

REI did say that they had gone all season without a fucked mount.
That is a fair point. REI does back up with new skis - if they carry them. I personally would still be careful with "that-extra-special-ski-that-I-have-been-hunting-for-six-months". But hey, if people in other locations have a kick-ass ski dept at their REI, then cool.

I'd like to be able to do the work myself but I'd probably just end up mounting my hand to the ski.

FWIW, Edgeworks screwed up one of my mounts last year. Got Naxos mounted and they mounted them using somebody elses (much bigger) boot. Resulting in the mount being about 1cm forward.

But to his credit, I didn't realize the mistake when I picked them up and just put them in the garage when I got home. An hour later I get a call from Matt saying "Hey, I just realized that I totally fucked up your mount. Tell me how to make it up to you"

that is a ringing endorsement of edgeworks, in a roundabout way.

Agreed. People screw up. I hadn't skied the skis yet so I didn't know if it was a problem or not. But I am the kind of guy who doesn't care what color of M&Ms are awaiting me backstage so I didn't demand anything and he hooked me up with some free tunes and whatnot. And just think, it was all resolved without a 30 post thread on TGR.

I know you're joking, but seriously - use a super-fine tip sharpie for my own mounts. <1mm line thickness

For the record, the manager did say that they had mounted 3000 pairs of skis this season, with 2 bad drills. 99.93% is pretty good, that's almost as reliable as my carry pistol and I trust that thing with my life.

I am always amazed at the ability of shops of all types to screw up. Somewhat related to mounting lines, we had an aftermarket wakeboard tower installed on our old boat a few years ago. I made sure I measured everything out beforehand, and I had two very clear "X"s in permanent marker on each side of the boat marking the front and rear mount. This of course was explained to the shop. Yet when they mounted the thing, they decided to only take the cover off until they saw the first mark - then they mounted the front of the tower there. So the tower ended up being several feet behind where it was supposed to be. I am still just in awe of the stupidity and laziness of some "professionals."

Pretty much every pair of skis I've had mounted has been fucked up. Then again, I always mount my own skis. Perhaps I should learn not to always decide to mount my skis when I'm drunk... <shrug>
