Actually, I think most drive too slow. People seem to be gripped with fear when there is any snow on the ground. With properly equipped snow tires, you should be able to drive a reasonable speed. When you're driving 40 mph, that's fine, just stay in the right lane.

Actually it's not about speed, it's about leaving enough room in front of you and the next car.

I'd bet that tractor trailer wasn't chained up, his back end started to come around and then all hell broke loose. One person is dead and I hope no one else was too seriously injured.
If he's at fault they should throw the book at that truck driver. They need to make an example out of one of those lazy assholes and start enforcing the chain law before more people die. Coming down the west side of Vail pass in bad weather with big rigs all around is dicey- no room at all for error.

Worth repeating. The ability of semis to react quickly (dodge, slow down, etc.) is nil.

I have no idea what happened here, but I can tell you from experience driving a 36' gooseneck trailer that people do a lot of dumb shit around large vehicles. Here's a little hint - you know how semis usually keep a big gap between them and the car in front of them? That's for a reason. Unless you want the semi to drive through your back window, stay the fuck out of that gap.

But yes, they need to obey the chain laws. I've actually been impressed this year - many times this year when the chain law was in effect on the east side of the tunnel, there was a state trooper sitting at the front of the chain up area watching for violators.

When visibility is 100%, people are doing 70 in the fast lane, on snow and ice.

Problem is, its a route frequented by all sorts of people, not just locals with snow tires.

As long as you plan ahead for the hills, you can usually average 80 or so in the slow lane.

On snowpacked roads, honestly, I don't see a problem with doing 70 mph if you have the proper vehicle with snow tires. On curves it's differnt of course. It's just about knowing your vehicle and knowing the conditions and proximity of vehicles in front of you. On really ice roads, of course, it's different. Not trying to start a flame war, but what is an acceptable speed with those conditions?

Simple solution: if you aren't comfortable with the road stay out of the fast lane.
    Or ride with CME.
On many parts of I-70 the speed limit is 65, and 5 miles over is not a big deal in most conditions. A lot of the problems start when stupid people going 50 mph blindly jump into the left lane to pass a truck and then everyone cruising along in the left lane has to hit the brakes.

I must've got out of Vail just in time. It was a clusterfuck going East because they had traffic stopped and then all the Vail ambulances couldn't get through to the wreck. Probably the worst pileup I've seen.

My pics are better than the ones on that 9news slideshow

Maggots stuck in Vail--less shitty way home--
4x4 - take 70 west to wolcott\steamboat exit, north to state bridge, right on the dirt road which follows the colorado river (below the current snow level), this road connects to highway 9 just south of kremmling, then drive south on 9 to I-70 at silverthorne. Report from summit at 8:00 this road is plowed, in great shape, with only about a 1/4 mile section of muddiness. He was in a subaru wagon and had no troubles.

less adventurous, same route, but continue past state bridge for quite a while to CO 134 gore pass, which will connect you to highway nine just north of kremmling. Road conditions were pretty good when KillingCokes and I came over about 7:00pm.

had the ok to take the day off but didn't want to make the drive out there

if I'd just sacked up and suffered through the drive I would've been stuck and had two awesome ski days

YOU'RE RIGHT. THERE'S A COUPLE OF SELF-APPOINTED DUMBFUCKS LIKE YOURSELF WHO THINK THEY DRIVE AS GOOD AS OTHERS WHO DO IT ALL THE TIME.

WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD, GAPER.
Hey d-bag - here's something for you to think about: maybe (just maybe) not everybody here has their little panties in a wad 24/7 and flies into a rage whenever somebody disagrees with them. Maybe these same mags don't take this place uber-seriously. Maybe this even includes the vast majority of the people who post here as opposed to you and like 20 other thin-skinned douchebags. Just something to think about. -JER
