NorCal trout?

So I will be in the bay area the last weekend in May and wanna go trout fishing... Where should I go? Will travel anywhere reasonable... I prefer fishing streams that are smaller and wadeable, and would prefer catching fish you can't catch here in AK (browns, brookies, goldens, what have you...)

If you have time, go up to the Tahoe area. But, there are prolly some trout streams closer than 3-4 hours.

The yuba off highway 20 has good fishing browns, rainbows, steelheads, good flows and easy access (watch out for the poision oak though). The american river above Auburn can also be good. But the best would be to drive up to Truckee and fish the Truckee river if the run off is not to big the fishing is great. This is my home water and would be happy to show you the spots when you come up. Truckee is a 3 hr drive from San Francisco.

i don't know if spring is a good time, but why not try a trip for striped bass in the bay or delta. definitely different than AK.

If you've got time head north - the Pitt is a damn good tail water. Otherwise May can be a blown out month - play it by ear. For a checkbox the McCloud is the source of hathcery bows.

Tahoe and the Sierra is a hike in summer fishery.

Would love to do that but I figure you need a boat and/or guide two things I don't have te money for...

the truckee looked really sweet when I was skiing in tahoe, its got what browns bows and latohan cutts right? Plus whitefish... And theres probably decent fishing in streams around the lake right?

the Truckee has browns, rainbows, some whiteys, a few Lahontans. Drive to Truckee there is easy acess to the river from here to the state line. You can try the little Truckee also this is a tailwater out of Stampede and Boca resivoir's smaller stream spooky fish and somtimes crowded with guides and clients but still fun!! Hopefully the run off will have mellowed out for you by then. There is a fly shop in town Truckee River outfitters who are very helpful with bugs and river acess they have a good fishing report you can check out before you come up http://www.renoflyshop.com/fishingreport.html[/url]

Be careful with the streams around the lake. They have later openings than the rest of norcal because Tahoe rainbows spawn later than other fish. I want to say the west shore streams open sometime in the beginning of June.

As for the truckee, it can be a lot like ship creek back home for you (minus the salmon of course), easy access but also a shit ton of people.

As for hike in access, ya that is true but only partially. If you go a little south or a little north of Tahoe, you will be pleasantly surprised with the drive up fishing. Lots of smaller creeks and a few bigger river options (little truckee north, east walker south). I think the little creeks shine though.

Many of the snowmelt fed streams in the sierra will be blown out. Try Putah Creek in Yolo County (not fed by snowmelt, find lake Beryessa on a map - it flows out of that). The creek is managed as a trophy fly fishery and has big ass browns in it.

The previous suggestion of striper action in the delta is a good one too.
