It helps to be good. But being downright lucky is even better.
Ask John Hostetter. The 45-year-old president of Wells Fargo Bank in Pagosa Springs will be the first to tell you.
Fishing by himself for pike on May 8 at Vallecito, Hostetter hooked what he thought was wood with his Rattlin' Rogue around 2 p.m.
It wasn't.
"I thought I had snagged a log. When I looked down and saw my rod, it was bent like a horseshoe," Hostetter recalled. "So, I put my boat in neutral to grab the fishing pole from the rod holder, and that's when I saw it had taken most of my line and the log was moving."
What Hostetter hooked was instead a 22-pound, 37-inch brown trout.

Damn monster, a pike I've seen that size, but a brown is something else, that thing is giant.
