NSFW postings in a SFW thread? (possibly NSFW content)

This has always seemed pretty straightforward to me. While the line between SFW and NSFW may be blurry sometimes (eg, buxom women on a beach in scanty bikinis?), some stuff is clearly over the line: full boobs/nipples, bush, etc.

Apparently, not everyone seems to agree. In a thread in the OT forum of TTips about Eliot Spitzer (http://telemarktalk.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=44133), I objected to the posting of a Viagra ad that included a naked woman (it is on page 3 of the thread). The ad may have been cute, and I surely have no issues with nekkidness, but it seemed inappropriate to be posted in a thread that was not labeled "NSFW"; to be put it in the thread, it should have been posted as a link with a NSFW warning. I wasn't thrilled to have that on my screen at work. Bear in mind (if you don't know already) that TTips is most definitely a safe for work site. Even in its OT forum, posting nudes would surely be frowned on by Mitch, and it's not a site that must be avoided if you work at a prudish place.

This seemed fairly well accepted internet forum posting etiquette to me, yet numerous people in the thread attacked me as having my panties in a bunch, or just attacked the whole NSFW etiquette.

Are they all morons, or am I a stuck up prude?

Nah, the AD's right. People who feel they need to post NSFW pics in threads that give no hint of it should be shot. They're potentially fucking peoples lives up for no reason except they think they're cool and above the rules.

On the other hand, somebody crying that there was no NSFW tag in a thread titled "TITS GALORE" or whatever, they should shut the fuck up too.

The first one is clearly in the gray area, some would find it objectionable, nipple or not. The second one is not ok, unless you were at a breast cancer web site, then it would probably be ok (but you still probably wouldn't want toyur boss to catch you checking her out). But not a lot of American accepted social mores make sense, surely you know that.

The reality is that a picture does not have to be "porn" for it to be NSFW. Having pictures of naked people on your computer screen is pretty widely accepted as not appropriate in the American workplace. There may be some gray areas (perhaps an art nude would be ok?), but for the most part, porn or not, naked = bad.

I've never had a problem with NSFW, but from what I understand others tell me, it is a problem to link a "SFW" pic from a known porn site. So, a hottie with her clothes still on would be NSFW.

Yes, I hear you danno.

I just find interesting how social norms may vary between two countries that share most of their values and are otherwise very close. And how the difference between naked and clothed is a square inche of (strategically placed) fabric. I'm just pointing the obvious, really... and beating a dead horse.

Now, unfortunately, pictures of naked people are not all over the screens in the french workplace... But we definitely take into account the context and the message (which, with the former photo is "fuck me" and with the latter "have your breast examined").
FWIW, the breast cancer ad has been displayed all over the magazines and on public bilboards.
